Women's World Cup ticket sales near 950000

Women's World Cup ticket sales near 950000

The 2019 Women's World Cup gets underway on Thursday in France, with host country and tournament favorite France facing off against Group A opponent South Korea in group stage play at the Parc des Princes in Paris.

More than 45,000 supporters filled the Parc des Princes to watch Les Bleues cruise to a one-sided victory, with giant defender Wendie Renard scoring twice in between goals from Eugenie Le Sommer and captain Amandine Henry.

In fact, consider their home advantages and the case for France winning their first Women's World Cup title becomes ever stronger - most of the starting XI are used to playing in these stadiums together, dominating every game they play and winning titles in the process.

"We can savour this but we have not won anything yet".

Le Sommer scored in the ninth minute off a cross from Henry and held up her hands in the shape of a heart in celebration after the earliest goal in a Women's World Cup opener. "We had a lot of time left and we had a lot of opportunities to score".

The inaugural women's Ballon d'Or victor, who scored a hat-trick for her club in last month's Champions League final, is at odds with her national federation and will be missed. "We went into the match the right way". It was Sommer's 75th goal for French squad in her career stint so far.

They were then presented with a good chance following a mistake by Renard, but Lee Mina dragged her shot wide.

Renard, selected player of the match, is among seven players on France's roster that play for Lyon, which routed Barcelona 4-1 to win the women's Champions League for the fourth straight year and sixth time overall.

South Korea lost 3-0 to France in the last 16 at the 2015 World Cup in Canada and would love to reach the knockout phase again.

Henry said after the match that the result will boost momentum for her side in coming matches. France are on a mission of revanche, and who better to spearhead the operation than a culmination of the best players from the best team in the world?
