Ferrari's Vettel turns fastest practice lap at Canadian Grand Prix

Ferrari's Vettel turns fastest practice lap at Canadian Grand Prix

Sebastian Vettel was slapped with a five-second penalty by race stewards, a punishment which ultimately cost the German what would have been a valuable 25 points.

Hamilton won with the 50th Canadian Grand Prix having started from second behind Vettel and remained in that position.

Vettel stopped Mercedes' sequence of four front-row lockouts with his first pole since July 2018, a run of 17 races, with a final lap hailed as "outstanding" by Sky F1's Martin Brundle.

Vettel and Hamilton nearly collided on lap 48 of Sunday's race in Montreal when the Ferrari ace re-entered the track having run wide on turn four. On his way there the theatre continued as he moved the No 1 marker board from in front of Hamilton's auto, replacing it with the No 2 and put the original where his vehicle would have stood had he brought it to the parc ferme.

"We knew they were quick - but this is good, this how racing should be ... hopefully we can put on a good show tomorrow".

Australian driver Daniel Ricciardo of Renault came in seventh at 1:12.045 to lead the way in the midfield.

"Very happy for the team because the last weeks have been quite tough for us".

"You know what, the feeling in the vehicle when it just keeps coming and the feeling - it felt so good".

'I had nowhere to go.Where the hell am I supposed to go? "They are stealing the race from us", he said to his team.

The Briton has won six times in Canada, including his maiden F1 victory in 2007 and if he can finish first on Sunday will equal Michael Schumacher's record of seven victories. "(For me) that was one of those laps; really, really, really nice.

Any hopes of rival teams that Mercedes would experience a few hiccups transitioning to an upgraded power unit were quickly dispelled with Hamilton topping the timing charts in each session and settling there until his run in with the wall.

Red Bull's Pierre Gasly grabbed fifth on the grid and will start alongside the Mercedes of Valtteri Bottas, who could do no better than sixth after an early spin in the final session sent the Finn to the pits. "It's very bumpy, it's very tight".

Sebastian Vettel earned his first pole since July of a year ago. We would have done better if we had a more normal day.

"There's always a balancing act about how hard you want to push and not make a mistake", said Latifi of his first practice run of the season.

Meanwhile, the infamous Wall of Champions claimed another victim when Kevin Magnussen lost control and hit the barrier, sending his Haas careening across the track and into the opposite wall.

His teammate, Sergio Perez, also missed the cut here - he will start 16th, with Stroll going off 18th - but Montreal is the first time he hasn't gone on to Q2 this season.
