Amazon’s New Delivery Drone Coming Soon

Amazon’s New Delivery Drone Coming Soon

Still, it's a major step forward for the company, which has invested heavily in research and development in drone delivery and is now testing the technology both in the US and overseas.

Amazon is aiming for deliveries of small items in less than 30 minutes with its latest drone design.

Wilke said the drones are fully electric, can fly up to 15 miles (24 kilometers), deliver in 30 minutes and carry goods that weigh up to 5 pounds (2.3 kilograms), like a paperback or toothpaste.

Amazon.com Inc. plans to spend billions of dollars building a network of thousands of satellites to provide broadband internet service, Chief Executive Officer Jeff Bezos said. Previous Amazon drones have been approved for testing, but each new design requires a new certificate.

Amazon demonstrated its drone delivery service at the re:MARS conference in Las Vegas. Before drone delivery of consumer goods can be implemented throughout the USA, more testing requirements and regulatory hurdles will have to be overcome.

Amazon said earlier this year it would speed up its free delivery for its Prime subscribers, now 2 days for most items, to a single day, with North American customers the first to benefit.

Earlier this year, the FAA issued Google spin-off Wing an FAA Certificate to operate as an air carrier for drones, the first such certificate granted, in order to facilitate legal drone delivery.

Whenever the drone detects an object or a person in the landing zone, it obviously aborts - or at least delays - the delivery attempt. Company claims to have been achieved this using explainable stereo vision in parallel with sophisticated AI algorithms trained to detect people and animals from above.

Amazon's Brad Porter showed off the "Pegasus Drive Sortation" device, which can take packages from where human workers place them and autonomously sort them, zipping off to a specific area where they'll be sent off to a given destination.

Amazon and other big tech companies are facing scrutiny from government agencies that are looking into their business practices.
