Media misreport Dutch teen Noa Pothoven's death as euthanasia

Media misreport Dutch teen Noa Pothoven's death as euthanasia

She went to specialists and was hospitalized before she contacted the Life End Clinic in The Hague to discuss being euthanized, according to The Sun.

In what she called a "sorrowful last post" on Instagram, now deleted, Noa said she had "stopped eating and drinking for a while now, and after many discussions and evaluations, it has been made a decision to let me go, because my suffering is unbearable".

As a result she suffered from a post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression and anorexia.

A story about a 17-year-old girl who died by legal euthanasia has been widely reported across the globe, but one of the central facts is reportedly incorrect. In 2017, the Netherlands saw a reported 6,585 deaths by legal euthanasia, according to the Dutch Regional Euthanasia Review Committees' most recent report.

The teen had documented her journey on an Instagram account, which has now been deleted, saying she sought treatment but the suffering was too severe. "Maybe this comes as a surprise to some, given my posts about hospitalization, but my plan has been there for a long time and is not impulsive".

On Instagram, the young girl had put up a post saying: "I will die within a maximum of 10 days".

"I may breathe, but I can no longer live", she wrote.

"I have quit eating and drinking for a while now, and after many discussions and evaluations, it was chose to let me go because my suffering is unbearable", Pothoven wrote, according to Inside Edition. "I can no longer call and I can barely app", wrote Pothoven further.

After suicide attempts, a year ago she had said that she would try trauma therapy a final time and her mother, Lisette, told The Gelderlander that she was choosing "the road towards death" while her family wanted her to choose life.

Children as young as 12 can seek euthanasia in the Netherlands, although patients younger than 16 years old need parental consent to do so. It has since been updated to reflect that it is unclear how the victim died.

Euthanasia is also legal in some USA states, Canada and Belgium.

She blogged about mental health issues.

To conclude her last message, she asked her friends and followers to "not convince me that this is not good, this is my decision and it is final", adding: "Love is letting go, in this case". "We will continue her struggle", Westerveld told Dutch media de Gelderlander.

Last year, her lack of eating led to her organs on the brink of failure and she had to go under a medical induced coma so she could get nutrients through tubes, Noa's award-winning book - Winning or Learning revealed. She approached a euthanasia clinic without her parents' knowledge last December. She told De Gelderlander that it was "nice to see her again", though the circumstances were "surreal". "I will never forget her".
