Kawhi files lawsuit against Nike over 'Klaw' logo

Kawhi files lawsuit against Nike over 'Klaw' logo

Kawhi Leonard wants his logo back.

The Toronto Raptors superstar has filed a lawsuit against Nike claiming he designed the logo that appeared on his Nike apparel, but the company copyrighted it without Leonard's consent.

The Los Angeles Clippers - who are rumored to be among Leonard's biggest free-agent suitors - reportedly looked into purchasing the portion of the rights to his logo, according to Marc Stein of The New York Times.

A Nike representative told CNN on Monday that the company does not comment on pending litigation. He's now under contract with New Balance.

Leonard did have an endorsement deal with Nike that expired.

The suit claims Leonard then allowed Nike to use the logo on Leonard clothing, apparel and footwear after he signed an endorsement deal with the company on October 26, 2011.

The 27-year-old intends to use the "Klaw" on clothing lines, footwear, other products, and in connection with sports camps and charity functions.

Toronto Raptors forward Kawhi Leonard (2) handles the ball against Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry (30) during the third quarter in game two of the 2019 NBA Finals at Scotiabank Arena.

Kawhi Leonard was relatively quiet in Game 1, as Pascal Siakam exploded for 32 points in a stunning performance in the win, but came alive in Game 2 with 34 points and 14 rebounds, almost dragging the Raptors to a comeback win in the fourth quarter. That game will be played Wednesday night. He said he started to create the logo while he was still in college.

The ultimate goal of the lawsuit is for Leonard to reclaim sole control over the logo so he can do with it as he pleases.

According to ESPN's Tim Bontemps, the lawsuit states that Leonard designed the logo just after being drafted.
