Apple's New Mac Pro: Up to 28 Cores and AMD Vega Graphics

Apple's New Mac Pro: Up to 28 Cores and AMD Vega Graphics

The new Mac Pro features a design that echoes the original Mac Pro, with a steel body, a mesh front panel, and handles at the top.

Apple is still Apple, of course, so there's not a lot of technical data available about exactly which parts are going into the Pros.

Apple is also introducing a new Sidebar feature, that lets you use your iPad as a second display for Mac, making third-party solutions, such as Astro HQ's Luna Display, largely redundant. The lattice design on the back acts as a heatsink to keep the display cool. And if you want to set the Mac Pro on the floor, but still be able to easily move the tower, you can attach optional wheels.

The system can also be outfitted with up to 1.5TB of system memory and has eight internal PCI slots with four of them supporting double-slot expansion cards. That includes two Thunderbolt 3 ports, two 10Gb Ethernet ports, two USB-A ports, and a 3.5mm audio jack. (That's not a typo). And if you're feeling lucky, you can add up to two Radeon Pro Vega II Duos, which will give you quad GPUs maxing out at 56 TFLOPS.

Pushing these along is a new graphics architecture dubbed the Apple MPX Module, a quad-wide PCIe card that includes its own heat sink and Thunderbolt 3 connector.

Add in the Afterburner accelerator card, magic Keyboard and Trackpad, and the price reaches around $45,000.

The computer is powerful enough to run three streams of raw 8K video. All of this hardware is juiced by a 1.4kW power supply.

The base model of the new Mac Pro will cost $5,999 and it'll arrive this fall. The baseline version comes with an 8-core Xeon processor, 32GB of RAM, Radeon Pro 580X, and a 256 SSD. Other users would be better served by Apple's 2019 MacBook Pro or the iMac Pro. Max in the storage, throw in 2x Radeon Vega II GPUs with an estimated price of $12,000, and the $4,999 Apple Pro XDR display and you are looking at a Mac Pro that costs well above $50,000.

The new Mac Pro and the Pro Display XDR itself are nothing short of overkill, which is exactly what professionals need, not just for today but years down the road.

Apple said the display boasts 1,600 nits of peak brightness and a 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio. Apple promises true 10-bit colour and super-wide viewing angles. That matte finish isn't just an extra glare-reducing coating, it's a nanoscale etching into the surface of the glass, which should stave off reflections and glare and never wear off.

It's been nearly eight years since we saw the release of a new Mac Pro design, and this year's announcement of the third-generation Mac Pro at WWDC 2019 was definitely meant to be exciting. The standard glass configuration will cost $4,999, and the nano-etched model is $5,999.
