China to probe FedEx after Huawei says parcels diverted

China to probe FedEx after Huawei says parcels diverted

The move is not entirely suprising, considering the mounting pressure the United States has been putting on Chinese technology giant Huawei.

The Trump administration delivered a massive blow to Huawei a few days ago, placing the biggest China's smartphone maker on the US Commerce Department "Entity List" that bans the sale of Huawei products in the country.

It issued the threat after Washington last month put Huawei on a blacklist that effectively blocks USA firms from doing business with the Shenzhen-based telecoms equipment maker.

That said, it is unclear what will happen exactly when a company gets put on China's blacklist.

China's Ministry of Commerce said it will establish a list of "unreliable entities", following the recent decision by the Trump administration to ban U.S. firms from doing business with Chinese telecommunications giant Huawei.

FedEx apologised and said the packages were misrouted accidentally.

The Ministry unveiled the initiative on Friday, without specifying the measures to be taken against the blacklisted companies, which it said would be announced in the near future.

Huawei has ordered its employees to cancel meetings with American contacts and sent US citizens working at its headquarters packing, a report claims. On another front, President Donald Trump said he plans to impose a 5% USA tariff on all Mexican goods over illegal immigration.

The US recently created an Entity List filled with unreliable foreign firms that could jeopardize its national security and now China is preparing to do the same.

The announcement of the list comes a day before China will increase tariffs on $60 billion in U.S. goods in retaliation to Trump's decision to hike punitive duties on $200 billion in Chinese products earlier this month.

Trump may ask Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin to meet with Chinese officials while in Japan next week amid an escalating trade dispute between the two countries, White House senior adviser Kellyanne Conway said. Investors are now looking to a meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping at the end of the month at the Group of 20 Summit in Osaka for a possible rapprochement and easing of trade tensions.
