'Gaming Disorder' Is Now Officially Recognised As A Disease By The WHO

Instead, ICD-11 indicates that someone who opts to give up those healthy tendencies purely for gaming - a person who dictates their entire life around the concept thereof, likely has Gaming Disorder.

World Health Organization described the gaming disorder as a pattern of persistent or recurrent gaming behavior online or offline characterized by impaired control over gaming, increased priority to gaming to the extent the person prioritizes it over daily activities and other life interests; and continuation or even escalation of gaming regardless that it significantly impairs important areas of functioning such as those that involve the family, occupation, and education. Regardless, the 11th edition of the International Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems which now includes "Gaming Disorder" was approved on May 25 and is to come into effect on 1 January 2022. Compulsive sexual behavior and online gambling addiction are also new to the list of health problems.

Many people might find the above points relatable, however, there is a difference in having a gaming disorder and being obsessed with it. As far the industry is concerned, gaming disorder might just be the symptom of several other underlying conditions.

People who may be professional gamers, streamers or are into gaming intensely but still live a healthy social and personal life, are not affected by the disorder.

Even with their previous victories, WHO's decision to add Gaming Disorder will continue to be contested by the ESA.

A number of European gaming industry representatives have called for the World Health Organization to reevaluate the decision, saying it's not based on enough "robust evidence to justify its inclusion in one of the WHO's most important norm-setting tools", they said in a statement. The consequences could be far reaching and might achieve the opposite of what the World Health Organization is setting out to do, according to the statement.

"I believe World Health Organization classifying workplace burnout as an official medical diagnosis will lead business organisations to take work-life balance more seriously, and implement wellbeing programs to prevent workplace burnout", he said. The U.S. video game industry generated $43.4 billion in revenue in 2018, and an estimated 2.5 billion people play video games globally. "We need to take it seriously and adopt countermeasures", he told reports (via Kyodo News). Recently, PUBG Mobile introduced a new feature that sends pop-ups to young players to remind them to put the game down and take a break.
