Fact Check: No, Trump Did Not Admit Russia Helped Him Get Elected

Fact Check: No, Trump Did Not Admit Russia Helped Him Get Elected

"Russia, Russia, Russia! That's all you heard at the beginning of this Witch Hunt Hoax", Trump tweeted on Thursday morning.

His 448-page report, released with redactions last month, concluded that Russian Federation had interfered in the 2016 presidential election "in sweeping and systematic fashion" but did not find there had been a criminal conspiracy between Moscow and the Trump campaign.

Trump meanwhile repeated his claim that the report offered him total exoneration, and that he has been the victim of "giant presidential harassment".

"No, Russia did not get me elected", Trump said.

Further stoking talk of impeachment, Mueller explicitly said that "the Constitution requires a process other than the criminal justice system to formally accuse a sitting president of wrongdoing".

Mueller is a "never-Trumper", the president said, his office was filled with bad people and Trump said he has done nothing wrong.

Mueller said that if his office "had confidence that the president clearly did not commit a crime, we would have said so".

Mueller appeared to have misgivings at one point as well, complaining to Barr in March that he had initially disclosed his main findings in an incomplete way that caused public confusion.

Trump also pointed to alleged "collusion between Hillary Clinton and Russian Federation", which many Republicans believed was key to the creation of a discredited "dossier" by former British spy Christopher Steele, who was being paid indirectly by the Democratic National Committee and the Clinton campaign.

Mueller said he has concluded the probe and that the Justice Department's report on Russian meddling in the elections has been made "largely" available to the public. They are not supposed to look for evidence that a crime was not committed and then say, "We couldn't find evidence of innocence." .

Trump walked out of an infrastructure meeting with Pelosi and Democratic Senate leader Chuck Schumer last week and said he would not work on legislation with Democrats until investigations were dropped. "CASE CLOSED", the graphic read. The House began impeachment proceedings against Richard Nixon in 1974, but he resigned before a full House vote on the articles took place, likely avoiding the shame of becoming the only president to be removed from office.

The president also offered mixed messages on Russia's efforts to help him defeat Democrat Hillary Clinton in the 2016 campaign.

Shortly afterwards, "Jan Brady" became a top 10 trending topic on Twitter as users shared screenshots of Trump's tweet along with memes, gifs and clips from the classic TV show.

"I told him NO".

Speaking later in New York, Nadler declined to answer directly a question about whether he would subpoena Mueller to testify anyway.

U.S. President Donald Trump speaks upon departure from the White House in Washington, U.S., May 30, 2019.

"Relitigating the 2016 election and reinvestigating the special counsel's findings will only further divide our country", he said in a statement. Given that Special Counsel Mueller was unable to pursue criminal charges against the President, it falls to Congress to respond to the crimes, lies and other wrongdoing of President Trump - and we will do so.

"So now the Dems and their partner, the Fake News Media, say he fought back against this phony crime that didn't exist, this horrendous false accusation, and he shouldn't fight back, he should just sit back and take it", he continued. Prior to his appointment as special counsel, Mueller served as FBI Director from 2001 to 2013.

It was not clear whether Mueller would testify to Congress.

But don't mistake that for exoneration, Mueller said.

Trump has repeatedly accused Mueller's staff of being "angry Democrats".
