Serena Williams includes feminist messages in French Open outfit

Serena Williams includes feminist messages in French Open outfit

Williams arrives in Paris still looking for a record-equalling 24th Grand Slam title having failed to lift a major title since returning previous year after giving birth to her daughter.

But the 23-time Grand Slam champion was resurgent in the second, drawing on her reserves of power.

After committing 14 unforced errors in the first set, Williams had a total of 10 in the second and third sets. On the women's side, can Simona Halep defend her title? "I knew that it could go worse".

The three-time French Open champion, who is aiming to equal Margaret Court's record of 24 Grand Slam singles titles, hit 20 winners in the final two sets as she increased the intensity against a rapidly wilting Diatchenko.

Instead, the focus once again was on what Williams wore.

The aim of the long sleeves and legs was, she said, to protect her because of past bouts with blood clots.

But she stormed back to level the encounter, cutting the errors by half and breaking in the second and sixth games of the set.

"I had my match plan and, yeah, some of the things, they didn't work out well", said Hanfmann, who played college tennis at USC.

Diatchenko sat at changeovers with a towel covering her head, as if embarrassed to be seen there. The American and the Russian have met only once before, at the 2015 US Open, where Diatchenko had to retire hurt and Serena won the match after leading in the first set.

The tennis player, 37, stepped out for the first match of the 2019 French Open wearing a custom Off-White for Nike crop top, skirt and cape-style jacket, the latter printed with the French words for "Mother, Champion, Queen, Goddess".

"I just got nervous out there and I stopped moving my feet". She quickly turned the tide to beat the world No. 83, 2-6, 6-1, 6-0.

She fell foul of tournament organizers a year ago with her one-piece black outfit which she said she needed to wear to boost her circulation.

Frances Tiafoe, at No. 32 the only American seeded in the men's draw, lost 6-2, 4-6, 6-3, 3-6, 6-0 to Filip Krajinovic of Serbia. "And to do the best that I can do", said Serena. The fifth-set result obviously came to that because (I) was obviously very depleted and had nothing really in me.

Roger Federer marked his return to Roland Garros after a four-year absence with a 6-2, 6-4, 6-4 win over Italy's Lorenzo Sonego on Sunday and said he had "missed playing in Paris so much".
