"If we lose: s*** decision" - Mauricio Pochettino's Harry Kane conundrum

Winks has only recently returned from injury and like Trippier could be involved in the Champions League final on June 2 for Spurs against Liverpool in Madrid.

Kane has been side-lined since sustaining ankle ligament damage in the first leg of Tottenham's quarter-final tie with Manchester City in mid-April, missing a run of seven games which included just two wins.

Kane, 25, has taken a full part in training since last Friday and has not had any setbacks, although his manager, Mauricio Pochettino, was less committed when asked if the team's top goalscorer is likely to start at the Wanda Metropolitano.

Explaining the hard decisions he had to make, he said: "Some players who have had really good finishes to the season like James Ward-Prowse and Nathan Redmond are staying with us for this period to train because although we have cut the squad to 23, we have still got two weeks to get through and two really big finals ahead".

"I think teams can go one or two ways if they have that disappointment".

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher reckons the long break between the end of the Premier League season and the Champions League final will benefit Spurs more than his old club. "Then it's down to the manager [Mauricio Pochettino]", Kane said. "But so far, I feel good and ready". I'm at a place now where I'm ready to go for any game.

Kane said he had chatted to Gareth Southgate, the England manager, over the weekend. If we lose: "shit decision, and you are going to kill me".

"So when we had other midfielders who are either with us or who are playing regularly, that was the only thinking behind that decision".

" I think both teams will probably use them [the league meetings] for analysis because it's the best thing you can do when you're playing against the team". Yet Tottenham will have spent the last three weeks eyeing up their place in history and as we saw in last season's Champions League final, the unexpected can happen on a night when the stakes are so high.

"The spirit is fantastic, every time we were close to be out but we showed a lot of character to win the game".
