Former Green Bay Packers great Bart Starr dies

Former Green Bay Packers great Bart Starr dies

The athlete's No. 15 jersey was retired by the team in 1973, and he returned to Green Bay once again as head coach from 1975-83.

Starr, a Montgomery native, had been in declining health since suffering a major stroke in 2014. Bart Starr's quarterback sneak won the game for the Packers and cemented him in the history of the NFL, Green Bay, and all of sports.

His most-famous moment came in the 1967 National Football League championship game - known thereafter as the "Ice Bowl" - when he scored on a quarterback sneak in the final seconds to give Green Bay a 21-17 victory over the Dallas Cowboys. On Monday, the Pro Football Hall of Fame released its tribute video to the quarterback.

Sadly, the former Green Bay quarterback passed away on Sunday at the age of 85.

Each week in 2019, the NFL has designated one game to commemorate the league's 100th season, picking matchups that represent "a momentous game played, a fierce rivalry that spans decades, a matchup of original teams and/or a game in which history was made".

Starr battled a series of health setbacks recently.

In 2014, Starr suffered two strokes and a heart attack. His recovery has included stem cell treatment and working with a trainer.

Brett Favre, right, smiles at Bart Starr during a ceremony at halftime of an NFL football game between the Green Bay Packers and Chicago Bears in Green Bay, Wis., on November 26, 2015.

'We are saddened to note the passing of our husband, father, grandfather, and friend, Bart Starr, ' it reads.

"His true legacy will always be the respectful manner in which he treated every person he met, his humble demeanor, and his generous spirit", the Starr family said. The game would provide the signature moment of Starr's career. It's no surprise that Favre thought so highly of Starr, as the two could certainly relate to one another. Telling none of his teammates, he chose to keep the ball himself.

We invite you to share condolences for Bart Starr in our Guest Book. With 16 seconds left, the Packers were down by three, and the ball was at the 1-yard line. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1977. He was a 17th round draft choice out of the University of Alabama. After taking an early 14-0 lead, Green Bay trailed 17-14 late in the fourth quarter. Starr then told Lombardi that he had no problem taking any "ass-chewing" he deserved, but that the coach should be able to apologize for any mistaken identification just as he had rolled over his quarterback in public.

Starr became the starting quarterback in 1959.
