Britain’s May to Resign without Brexit Deal

Britain’s May to Resign without Brexit Deal

Theresa May said on Friday that she will quit as Conservative leader on June 7, paving ways for contest to decide Britain's next prime minister.

"It would be much tidier if she stays on as caretaker while we go through our processes of electing a leader of the Conservative Party who will then eventually take over as prime minister", Clifton-Brown told the BBC.

"I do so with no ill will but with enormous and enduring gratitude to have had the opportunity to serve the country I love".

The US leader is scheduled to make a state visit to Britain next month and will meet with May just days before her final day in office, which is June 7.

Leadsom said she could not present the prime minister's withdrawal bill - which May plans to publish Friday - to parliament because she opposed a second referendum.

Leadsom, 56, the former Leader of the House of Commons, has previously hinted at a run for the leadership of her party and again made her intentions clear on Wednesday with a vehement denouncement of May's latest Brexit offer. It is now chaired by Sir Graham Brady, although it was reported on Friday that he was himself considering joining the contest, which would require him to step aside from his committee role.

She noted, "It is and will always remain a matter of deep regret to me that I have not been able to deliver Brexit".

She said her successor would need to find a consensus in parliament on Brexit.

There were two occasions when two Cabinet ministers resigned within 24 hours of each other: David Davis as Brexit secretary and Boris Johnson as foreign secretary on 8-9 July 2018; and Dominic Raab as Brexit secretary and Esther McVey as work and pensions secretary on 15 November.

"Such a consensus can only be reached if those on all sides of the debate are willing to compromise", she said.

But seen from that sceptered isle drifting scarcely 20 miles out at sea, the European Union looks more like a political assassin, one with a particularly rapacious appetite for British prime ministers. Johnson, the former foreign secretary who has been an MP since 2015 is thought to have the best shot of becoming the next PM.

But he said it was now time to "come together and deliver Brexit".

Former works and pensions secretary Esther McVey quit alongside Dominic Raab past year in protest at Mrs May's Brexit strategy, and recently launched "Blue Collar Conservatism", a campaign group that has been seen as a vehicle to further her own leadership ambitions.

A member of the Conservative Party is expected to succeed her.

Health and Social Care Secretary Matt Hancock, another potential leadership contender, said it was an "incredibly moving and dignified" speech.

Johnson has said if elected leader, he will seek to renegotiate May's contentious Brexit deal, itself the result of almost two years of ill-tempered haggling with Brussels. And analysts say that to do so, he or she may have little choice but to steer Britain toward what was once seen as a remote possibility but is increasingly viewed as a live prospect: a chaotic departure from the European Union with no agreement on what comes next.

Mrs May might still try to press on with her new Brexit plan, which includes a vote on whether to hold a second Brexit referendum - once her legislation passes the first stage - as well as closer trading arrangements with the EU.

Mr Corbyn said Mrs May had finally accepted "she cannot govern and nor can her divided and disintegrating party".
