Theresa May resignation: Tories urge PM to quit as European Union elections loom

May, who offered to quit if her deal to leave the European Union was passed by parliament, is under pressure to detail when she will leave office from angry Conservative lawmakers who want a new leader to try to improve the party's fortunes.

He told the BBC's Andrew Marr Show that the two main parties had failed to deliver the result of the Brexit referendum.

Formed earlier this year, the Brexit Party is a pro-Brexit political party which wants to see the United Kingdom leave the European Union without a withdrawal agreement. Watch it live from midday.

Mrs May's government hopes Britons elected to the European Parliament will not need to take their seats.

A survey carried out by Yougov shows that just 10 per cent of Londoners are planning to back the Tories in the vote on 23 May, leaving them behind the Lib Dems on 17 per cent and the Greens on 14 per cent. "And I believe if we leave the Labour and Conservative parties to deal with this, we will never get the Brexit we voted for".

But other ministers said now was not the time to force May out, arguing her departure would do little to change the arithmetic in parliament, which has already rejected her deal three times.

36% of respondents were not aware of the Conservative stance and 38% were not aware of Labour's.

In this election, we vote for a party, not named candidates.

Speaking to The Mail on Sunday, Liz Truss said as a woman in politics "you have to be prepared to put yourself forward". "I think in most people's word association, manifesto equals lie".

That level of support would see the Brexit Party win 49 seats, becoming the UK's second biggest party after Labour, with 137.

"But raising expectations of the kind of deal the United Kingdom could get and using the phrase "no deal is better than a bad deal" so relentlessly was always going to open the party up to this kind of challenge once those expectations could not be met".

Chancellor Philip Hammond's ministerial aide Huw Merriman said he expected a bleak set of results from the European contests, with both pro-EU and Brexit-supporting voters turning against them.

"We're at the flawless storm, so yes, I think we'll get an absolute mauling".

The website's editor Paul Goodman, a former Tory MP, said: "However unpalatable it may be, the Committee must, if she refuses this week to go by the end of the summer, change the leadership challenge rules immediately - perhaps with a trigger ballot threshold of 40% or so".
