Felicity Huffman to plead guilty in college admissions scam

Felicity Huffman to plead guilty in college admissions scam

She is among 14 prominent parents who have agreed to plead guilty since dozens of people were arrested in March in the case named Operation Varsity Blues. Federal prosecutors are aiming for a sentence between four and ten months in federal prison on the guilty plea.

USA actress Felicity Huffman has pleaded guilty to fraudulently conspiring to win a college place for her daughter.

Huffman and Singer exchanged emails on how to provide her daughter with extra time to take the SAT exam and arranged for the child to take the test in a location controlled by an administrator whom Singer had bribed, according to the complaint.

The charges include conspiracy to commit mail fraud and honest services mail fraud, while the scam reportedly involved money sent to a California businessman who promised to get applicants into the colleges of their choice.

Sports coaches at universities were also bribed to get youngsters with little talent accepted as recruits for teams.

Strategies included paying invigilators to fix answers, and allowing impostors to sit the exams.

Actress Lori Loughlin is accused of hiring Singer as well, though the charges against her are more serious. Her husband, actor William H Macy, didn't attend. The two-part scheme, prosecutors said, included cheating on tests and helping applicants pose as recruited athletes to improve their chances of admission.

Huffman later discussed the scheme in a recorded phone call with Singer, the complaint says. In a written statement at the time, she expressed "deep regret and shame over what I have done", and said she was ashamed for the pain she had caused her daughter, friends and others.

The "Desperate Housewives" star is scheduled to appear Monday in Boston federal court.

Authorities say Sloane gave $250,000 to an admissions consultant's sham charity and the USC women's athletic program and to have his son designated as a water polo recruit even though he didn't play the sport.

Several parents have already pleaded guilty, including Gordon Caplan and Bruce and Davina Isackson. Her charges carried a sentence of up to 20 years in prison, but with the plea deal prosecutors have recommended a lighter sentence of 4-to-10-months.

The affidavit says that Huffman's daughter took the SAT in December 2017 at a testing center in West Hollywood, Calif., and received a score of 1420.

Experts differ on whether Huffman's swift acceptance of responsibility will leave her with an acting career. A limited Netflix series featuring Huffman on the Central Park Five case is expected to debut this month.
