Iran Says It Will Continue To Enrich Uranium Despite U.S. Pressure

The United States has tightened sanctions on Iran by increasing restrictions on Iran's nuclear program.

State TV quotes Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani as saying Saturday that under the 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and world powers, Tehran has the right to continue developing uranium enrichment and heavy-water production.

"Iran must stop all proliferation-sensitive activities, including uranium enrichment, and we will not accept actions that support the continuation of such enrichment".

"Under the JCPOA, Iran can produce heavy water... and based on the agreement, we have not carried out anything in violation of it", Larijani said on Saturday.

"We note Iran's continued compliance with the JCPoA, as repeatedly confirmed by the IAEA", the statement says.

As part of the agreement, Iran was to sell any enriched uranium above that threshold on global markets in return for natural uranium, with Russian Federation a key player.

The EU and the three European signatories of the accord said in a joint statement on May 4 that they were troubled by the US decision "not to fully renew waivers for nuclear nonproliferation projects in the framework" of the accord, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

The United States also scrapped its sanctions waiver that had allowed Iran to evade a 300 kg limit on the amount of low-enriched uranium it can store under the nuclear deal at its main nuclear facility of Natanz.

"The lifting of nuclear-related sanctions is an essential part of the JCPoA - it aims at having a positive impact not only on trade and economic relations with Iran, but most importantly on the lives of the Iranian people", they stressed in their statement.

"We know what they are doing, but we are not like some novice [countries] in the region and we will do nothing ... that may lead to further chaos in the region", the Iranian parliamentarian said.

"Last year, we had non-oil exports of $43 billion (Dh158 billion). We should increase production and raise our (non-oil) exports and resist America's plots against the sale of our oil".

The U.S. announced on April 22 that Washington has decided not to extend waivers allowing major importers to continue buying oil from Iran. We call upon Iran to continue implementing in full its commitments under the JCPOA as well as its obligations under the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons'.

The Trump administration also took the unprecedented step of designating Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps as a foreign terrorist organization.
