Palestinian mother, baby killed in Israeli raids on Gaza

Palestinian mother, baby killed in Israeli raids on Gaza

The country's Iron Dome missile-defence system shot down dozens of the rockets, the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) said.

The army said earlier it had targeted two rocket launchers in Gaza with an air strike in response.

A Palestinian gunman shot and wounded two Israeli soldiers at the boundary fence. As the violence continued Saturday, the Israel Air Force attacked more than 120 targets in the Gaza Strip and even escalated its operations Saturday evening by bombing a six-story building in the Rimal neighborhood of Gaza City that housed the Hamas Prisoner Affairs Ministry, as well as the Hamas military intelligence building.

Gazans were protesting along the Israeli border fence as part of the Great March of Return, a weekly demonstration at the fence which started last March and has since seen more than 200 Gazans killed, and thousands injured.

The flare-up comes after Israel reported Friday that two of its soldiers were lightly wounded in a shooting incident along its border with Gaza.

Israel hit 30 Gaza targets, including a "high-end Islamic Jihad tunnel" prepared to attack Israel, according to Conricus.

There were no reports of Israeli casualties as numerous rockets were intercepted and rockets alerts sent residents running to their shelters.

The two militants were killed in an Israeli airstrike on Friday on a Hamas training facility.

Israel is also due to host the 2019 Eurovision song contest finals in less than two weeks in Tel Aviv.

"The resistance will continue to respond to the crimes by the occupation and it will not allow it to shed the blood of our people", the Hamas terrorist group's spokesman Abdel-Latif al-Qanoua said in a statement on May 4.

The Israeli military says its aircraft have begun targeting militant sites in Gaza in retaliation for a flurry of rockets fired from the blockaded enclave into southern Israel. More than 70 Israelis and one foreign national were also killed.

The military accused the Islamic Jihad of trying to destabilise the area, and attacked Hamas for failing to prevent the bombings.

Israel and Egypt have maintained a crippling blockade on Gaza since Hamas, which seeks to destroy Israel, seized control of the territory in 2007.

Hamas is classified by the EU, Israel and the U.S. as a terrorist organization.

Egypt has always been the broker between Israel and the Islamist group that runs Gaza.

Egypt has been trying to reach a long-term cease-fire between Hamas and Israel, who fought three wars the past decade.
