Barr skips session with House Democrats, escalates standoff

Barr skips session with House Democrats, escalates standoff

Nadler has threatened to hold Barr in contempt of Congress for refusing to turn over the full report.

It's unclear whether Barr will eventually negotiate an appearance with the House panel. "It is something else entirely to allow his advisers to appear before Congress." the letter said. He did not honor the subpoenas of Congress.

Nadler's contempt threat isn't tied to Barr's failure to appear Thursday, but rather over a subpoena to obtain the unredacted report from special counsel Robert Mueller.

The Justice Department quickly hit back after Pelosi made the accusation.

The Justice Department on Wednesday called the conditions "unnecessary" and staff questions inappropriate.

The California Democrat then tweeted: "Attorney General Barr's decision to mislead the public in his testimony to Congress was not a technicality - it was a crime".

The standoff puts Barr squarely in the spotlight - both for his robust defense of the president and for picking a fight with House Democrats two weeks after releasing the redacted version of Mueller's report on his investigation into Trump and Russian Federation.

The letter is dated April 19, one day after the Justice Department released the redacted report to the public.

Asked whether Barr should go to jail for lying to Congress, the speaker hesitated before saying: "there's a process involved here".

"They want it to look like an impeachment hearing because they won't bring impeachment proceedings", he said. It did find that Trump and his campaign did not engage in a criminal conspiracy with Moscow.

Mueller explained in his report that he saw the effort in part as preserving details because the President "does not have immunity after he leaves office" and that his team "conducted a thorough factual investigation in order to preserve the evidence when memories were fresh and documentary materials were available". Mueller's team noted that some individuals invoked their Fifth Amendment rights against self-incrimination, while others provided "false or incomplete" information. Nadler has issued a subpoena for McGahn to testify in its investigation of possible obstruction of justice by the president. "He's the people lawyer", Biden said of Barr.

In a letter sent to the committee late Wednesday, Assistant Attorney General Steven Boyd laid out a list of reasons that the department won't provide the full Mueller report or all the underlying evidence.

"You're biased in this situation", Harris replied. Inslee said Barr should "resign immediately".

As for the House Democrats, they spent today mocking Barr with props. Nadler and the Democrats had demanded that staff attorneys in addition to lawmakers be allowed to question Barr.

Pelosi was referring to Barr's answer to a question by Crist before the House Appropriations Committee last month, according to Politico.

The top Republican on the House Judiciary panel, Doug Collins of Georgia, said Thursday night that in choosing unusual ground rules, "Nadler chose to torpedo our hearing". Attorney General William Barr: "No".

Mr Barr, who was appointed by Mr Trump, told the Senate Judiciary Committee he was "frankly surprised" Mr Mueller did not reach a conclusion on whether the president had tried to obstruct justice.

Barr had apparently masterminded the most inept cover-up in history, first by accurately laying out the outcome of the special counsel's investigation.
