Glitch in server leaves Air India passengers stranded globally

Glitch in server leaves Air India passengers stranded globally

Operations of several Air India flights were affected across the globe after the airline's internal server crashed in the wee hours of Saturday.

Air India's passengers were stranded across its network after its flights were grounded due to a server issue that persisted for six hours before it could be rectified.

The effects of the technical snag were felt particularly at Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport where the number of stranded passengers reportedly crossed a hundred, reported News18.

Saturday's software malfunction is a repeat of a similar outage in June previous year that caused flight delays globally.

"Between 3:30 to 4:30 am today, passenger services' system of Air India that is run by SITA was taken for maintenance". Operations of all these flights have been affected due to the techincal glitch.

SITA regretted the inconvenience caused and said it had experienced a complex system issue during server maintenance early morning which resulted in operational disruption to flights.

"We are undertaking a full investigation to understand the root cause and prevent a recurrence. Operations are normal now (sic)".

Air India said that the "temporary glitch" was restored at 8:45 am. The system has been restored.

According to airline sources, the problem was apparently with the SITA server which provides the technology for check-in, baggage handling and boarding.

"Air India System restored", Ashwani Lohani, Chairman and Managing Director of Air India, was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.

Air India's operations have been affected since 3 am.

About affected passengers, the CMD said that the airline is trying its best to inform them through social media and its call centre. All flights cancelled. Thousands of passengers stranded at the airport.
