4 injured in shooting at California synagogue

Harrowing reports of a shooter at a synagogue emerged as victims called 911 in Poway, California at roughly 11:30 am local time this morning.

A Palomar Medical Center Poway spokesperson told CNN that they were receiving one trauma patient from a shooting at a synagogue.

Earlier, local police warned of reports of an armed man near Congregation Chabad.

The Poway sheriff's department sent out a tweet saying the shooting occurred just before 11:30 a.m. Saturday.

Officials say a man has been detained for questioning.

A Passover service was reportedly being held when the shooting took place.

It added that the synagogue was hosting its Passover Holiday Celebration, which was scheduled to begin at 11:00 am.

A suspect, described only as a man, has been detained for questioning, the sheriff's office said.

Deputies have advised any and all residents to continue to avoid the area as the sheriff's office continues to investigate.

Additionally, the incident comes six months to the day after a gunman stormed the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh killing 11 people in what was the deadliest anti-Semitic attack in USA history.

Poway just over 20 miles north of San Diego.

Civil and criminal trial attorney Ted Williams reacts to breaking news.
