Apple revealed as major AWS customer

Apple revealed as major AWS customer

In January 2018, Apple had said it planned to invest $10 billion in the next five years on establishing data centres in the US.

One has to think that Apple's spending on AWS won't continue indefinitely as the company traditionally doesn't like to put all of its eggs in one basket.

Despite all this, Apple now spends more than $30m a month with AWS, people familiar with the matter told CNBC - more than any other publicly announced customer.

Although Apple revealed in the past it has been using AWS for iCloud storage it never officially disclosed that other Apple services are also leveraging AWS or third-party clouds.

According to two people familiar with the spending, in the first quarter of 2019, Apple's spend average more than $30 million a month which is 10% more than the same period in the first quarter of 2018. It spends over $30 million each month on the cloud service (via CNBC). "That would be more than 10 percent higher than the same period previous year, according to two people familiar with the spending".

In December previous year, the iPhone-maker said it would spend $4.5 billion of that amount through 2019, the report added.

Back in February, Apple posted a job advert to recruit a senior DevOps engineer for its Cupertino HQ that could help the company architect its "growing AWS footprint". Of course, it should also be noted that Apple had previously reported it also uses some of Google's cloud services as well as some technology from Microsoft, too. All that said, Apple is now at work trying to build its own cloud infrastructure, meant to improve the company's ability to deliver internet services without having to rely on its friendly competitors.

Should these conditions hold up Apple will be on track to spend more than $360 million on Amazon Web Services this year.

If Apple continues to use AWS at those levels for the rest of the year, its annual spending on Amazon's cloud services would exceed $360m.

Earlier this year, Apple agreed to spend at least $1.5 billion on AWS over the next five years as part of an agreement.
