Quake kills at least 11, 24 missing in northern Philippines

There is no tsunami warning and no immediate reports of damage.

The quake damaged houses, roads, bridges, Roman Catholic churches and an worldwide airport terminal at Clark Freeport, a former American air base, in Pampanga.

Mayor Condralito dela Cruz said the bodies of four victims were pulled from Chuzon Supermarket in the town of Porac.

At least eight people were killed in the natural disaster when several buildings collapsed, trapping dozens beneath the rubble.

An old Roman Catholic church in Pampanga was damaged in the quake, which also caused cracks in highways and bridges.

Another strong tremor hit the country Tuesday, this time an even stronger magnitude 6.5 quake in the Visayas.

Heavy lifting equipment and search dogs were used as dozens of firefighters, military and civilian rescue teams raced to shift lumps of concrete in a commercial area of Porac, about 110 km (68 miles) north of Manila, where a 6.1 magnitude quake damaged several buildings on Monday.

At least 14 people remained missing in the rice-growing agricultural region, majority believed to be in the rubble of the collapsed supermarket in Porac, while 81 others were injured, according to the government's disaster-response agency.

Local media reported that Clark Airport, which is a former U.S. military base, had temporarily closed forcing more than 100 flights to be cancelled.

The quake heavily damaging Clark International Airport and sent terrified office workers in the capital, Manila, fleeing swaying high-rises. Many described the ground movement as rolling "sea waves", the Associated Press reported.

It was still closed on Tuesday as officials assessed the heavy damage to the terminal building and some cracking on the air traffic control tower.

The Philippines is one of the most disaster-prone countries in the world, with frequent quakes and volcanic eruptions.
