Major League Baseball hands down suspensions in Royals-White Sox incident

Chicago White Sox shortstop Tim Anderson was suspended for one game after calling Kansas City Royals pitcher Brad Keller a "weak-ass f--ing [N-word]" during a benches-clearing incident precipitated by Keller hitting Anderson with a pitch, league sources told ESPN.

Keller, who was suspended five games, was apparently reacting to a perceived insult - Anderson spiked his bat following his fourth-inning home run on Wednesday.

The next time Anderson came to the plate, in the sixth inning, Keller hit Anderson in the rear end with the first pitch, a 92 miles per hour fastball.

Kansas City Royals bench coach Dale Sveum (46) and Chicago White Sox manager Rick Renteria shove each other as benches clear after Chicago White Sox's Tim Anderson was hit by a pitch during the sixth inning of a baseball game in Chicago, Wednesday, April 17, 2019. While Anderson was visibly upset with getting hit and was clearly jawing with the Royals, he did not charge at or put his hands on an opponent.

Anderson has a batting average of.422 with four home runs and 12 RBIs on the season.

Keller's - who was suspended for five games - and Anderson's suspensions are subject to appeal, Torre noted.

And as details emerge as to the reason for the suspension, it starts to shed light on why Anderson was likely tossed from Wednesday's game. 'I'm the one that ended up in the locker room, and I was the one that got hit by a pitch'.

Nothing Anderson did in response to getting hit appeared to warrant an ejection.

Both benches cleared, and no punches were thrown.

Anderson has often talked about encouraging players to express themselves, something Major League Baseball has tried to embrace with its "Let the Kids Play" marketing campaign.

"We're going to keep moving forward", Anderson said. "Just take the one day and use it as an off-day. I can't place a limit on anybody's personalities", Renteria said.
