TikTok no longer available from Play Store and App Store in India

TikTok no longer available from Play Store and App Store in India

India is one of the largest users of the App, and the recent Government move will hit downloads of TikTok hard. The app was not available in Apple's app store on Wednesday, the report added.

Senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi, appearing for Chinese company ByteDance, said there were over billion downloads of the mobile app and an ex-parte orders were passed by the Madurai bench of Madras High Court. The court then banned the application citing that it encourges pornography and illict content.

Consequent to the Supreme Court's decision to not interfere with the ban at that stage, the Government of India's Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology directed Google and Apple to remove the app from the Google Play Store and Apple App Store respectively. "We are optimistic about an outcome that would be well received by over 120 million monthly active users in India, who continue using TikTok to showcase their creativity and capture moments that matter in their everyday lives", a TikTok spokesperson said.

With crores of people in India already using TikTok and all of them having the option to share the app with others, blocking its access on Google Play Store and Apple App Store may not have the desired results, say experts. Apple followed suit, blocking the app, and you will no longer be able to find the app on either of the two most popular stores.

"This marked a year-over-year increase of 70 percent from Q1 2018, when 110 million users installed the hit app for the first time", Sensor Tower stated. The popular video making app has drawn huge criticism recently over its misuse.

Earlier in the week the Supreme Court's had also refused to stay the interim ban on the app's downloads. The next hearing of the case is scheduled for April 24.

Reacting to the top court's refusal to stay the high court's order, TikTok said: "We have faith in the Indian Judicial system and the stipulations afforded to social media platforms by the Information Technology (Intermediaries Guidelines) Rules, 2011.We have been stepping up efforts to take down objectionable content".

Bytedance also argued that a "very minuscule" proportion of TikTok content was considered inappropriate or obscene by its users.
