College student dies after falling from campus clock tower weeks before graduation

College student dies after falling from campus clock tower weeks before graduation

Sydney Paige Monfries, 22, from Portland, Oregon, suffered fatal injuries following the horror plunge at Fordham University campus in NY, weeks before graduation.

Students told The Post it was a "rite of passage" among seniors to climb the tower, touch the bell and take photos outside one of the windows.

It is not clear how exactly she lost her footing but she fell through an opening in a landing. Her condition was listed as critical at a hospital in the Bronx not far from the Fordham campus. The New York Fire Department described the injuries as "the back of her head was smashed in and her vitals flat-lined at the scene, but she was revived".

USA media reported emergency services struggled to rescue gravely injured Ms Monfries from the building after they realised it wasn't possible to carry her via stretcher down the staircase.

"There are no words sufficient to describe the loss of someone so young and full of promise - and mere weeks from graduation", wrote school President Joseph McShane in a letter to students.

McShane invited the Fordham community to a mass for Monfries at 7 p.m.in the University Church.

Monfries, of Portland, Ore., was set to graduate in May with a degree in journalism.

Students said climbing the tower, touching the bell and taking photos of the sweeping views, were part of a senior-year "rite of passage", according to the paper.

Fordham Public Safety is still investigating how Monfries and her friends were able to get inside.

"There's the three things you have to do at Fordham", said Lili Huang, a 21-year-old, told the Times.

However the tower is off-limits to students and should have been locked, though there is now no information on whether the tower was unlocked or if the lock had been tampered with.

"The doors aren't always locked". They usually go late at night at around 1 or 2 a.m.to drink and see the view, ' Priscilla Morales told The New York Times. "They are always doing some kind of cleaning or renovation", she said.

Christopher Rodgers, dean of students at Rose Hill, told The Ram in 2013 that since "the clock tower is rather unsafe, and therefore secured area of campus, students would likely face disciplinary action if they entered it". Organizers held a moment of silence for Monfries this morning.
