Deadly storms continue their destruction across southern U.S.

Deadly storms continue their destruction across southern U.S.

On Sunday afternoon, the National Weather Service stated "a tornado has been confirmed in far western Franklin County, AL (near Pleasant Site), though the total path length and EF-rating is yet to be determined". A spokeswoman for the Monroe County Sheriff's Office said authorities were in Hamilton and could not be reached for confirmation.

The National Weather Service of Fort Worth went on to rate the tornado an EF-3, with 140 miles per hour winds.

One person was killed in northeastern MS when a tree crashed onto his trailer, Monroe County Road Manager Sonny Clay said at a news conference, adding that a tornado had struck.

Two people were hospitalized for injuries not thought to be life-threatening, while others were treated at the scene for minor injuries, Yezak said. Some people had to be extricated from damaged dwellings. In nearby Cherokee County, winds of up to 60 mph damaged two homes in the town of Alto, about 140 miles (225 kilometers) north of Houston.

The storms produced additional tornadoes throughout Louisiana and MS on Saturday night as the storm moved east threatening the upper Ohio Valley and central Appalachians to the upper Gulf Coast on Sunday, before moving to the mid-Atlantic.

His 71-year-old wife, Linda, was in a different part of the house and also survived, he said.

"We're living, and God has blessed us", Scott, a retired manager for a grocery store meat department, said Sunday as neighbors helped him salvage his belongings. Damage from that first round of storms included reports of trees down in Gwinnett, Walton, Paulding, Butts and Lamar counties.

Police in Monroe County earlier described the destruction from the storm Saturday evening.

The large storm system also caused flash floods in Louisiana, where two deaths were reported. No injuries have been reported, but officials said several businesses and vehicles were damaged.

A tornado touched down and spun toward Enigma, Georgia, on Sunday, after 17 twisters were reported on Saturday and Sunday across the South from Texas to Alabama.

The same system caused damage in Columbus, Mississippi. The man, whose name was not immediately released, died after being taken to a hospital.

"We're talking about tens of millions of people with some stormy weather before this Sunday is over", he said Sunday on "FOX & friends".
