Corbyn calls on UK Government to oppose Julian Assange extradition

Corbyn calls on UK Government to oppose Julian Assange extradition

It is also possible that Assange, 47, will face an extradition request from Sweden if prosecutors there decide to pursue allegations of rape and sexual misconduct against him.

Women's groups have added to pressure on Sajid Javid to ensure Julian Assange is extradited to Sweden.

"And if he's not innocent then of course the Swedish justice system is generally seen as quite fair - he won't be mistreated as we suspect he will be at a U.S. super-max jail".

And so now Julian Assange of Wikileaks has been dragged out of his "sanctuary" in the London embassy of Ecuador for failing to clean his cat's litter box. Mr Assange spent nearly seven years in the embassy in London where he sought political asylum in 2012 when he failed in his legal battle against extradition to Sweden.

Prosecutors said they were looking again at the case after a request by the lawyer of the alleged victim.

Two British judges a year ago agreed to block the extradition of accused hacker Lauri Love to the USA, on the grounds it would be "oppressive", in a ruling hailed a "landmark judgement". However, much of the coverage focused on the US request for his extradition on a single charge of conspiring with former US Army intelligence analyst Chelsea Manning to steal military secrets.

The show trial of Julian Assange on US soil, when it comes to pass, may end up being the straw that stirs America's Mickey Finn as a legitimate republic.

The official, who wished to remain anonymous, says U.S. authorities have already sent Britain a provisional arrest warrant regarding Assange's extradition.

Extradition can be blocked to countries where the death penalty may be used, but human rights lawyer Karen Todner, who represented Mr McKinnon, said the United States was likely to give assurances that capital punishment would not be on the table in Assange's case.

"And he said, 'I told you so'".

But she said Assange should face the criminal justice system if the Swedish government charged him.

A law change following the case of accused cyber-hacker Gary McKinnon, who has Asperger's, shifted responsibility away from ministers to the courts after then-home secretary Theresa May intervened to stop his extradition to the United States in 2012. She said a request by Swedish authorities, however, shouldn't be ignored. But Ecuador abruptly withdrew its asylum and invited the police to arrest Assange on Thursday.

Sweden's Prosecution Authority said Thursday they were considering reopening the investigation against Assange.

The allegations by two women have not been tested in court and Assange has denied wrongdoing.

The Wikileaks founder will next appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court on May 2 by prison video-link in relation to the extradition.

The extradition process is not swift, and Assange could appeal several times if decisions go against him.
