Google’s Wing Beats Amazon By Introducing Drone Delivery Service

Google’s Wing Beats Amazon By Introducing Drone Delivery Service

The partners that are working with Wing include Drummond Golf, Capital Chemist, Kickstart Expresso, Bakers Delight, and others.

FAA documents associated with the application said Wing Aviation was proposing to conduct package deliveries using small fixed-wing drones in a rural area of the United States.

Drone company Wing - an offshoot of Google's parent company Alphabet - has been trialling deliveries for the last 18 months, but will now be able to go ahead full time.

"Our service allows customers to order a range of items such as fresh food, hot coffee, or over-the-counter [pharmacist] items on our mobile app, and have them delivered directly to their homes by drone in minutes", a Wing blog announcement said. As part of the agency's new policy, drone deliveries will only be conducted on weekdays between 7 a.m. and 8 p.m.

Having begun tests in Australia in 2014, Wing has been delivering food, household items and medicines to homes in Fernleigh Park, Bonython and Royalla, with the service's arrival in Canberra signalling an incoming widespread deployment.

The drone service will be available in North Canberra, Australia.

Wing says is plans to expand both its serviced locations and the number of businesses it works with "in the coming weeks and months".

"Drone delivery has the potential to offer greater autonomy to the 13,000 people with a disability and 6700 elderly people living in the ACT who may need assistance with mobility".

Wing has been testing its drones in the region for the past year and a half, and according to CASA the flying machines have "satisfied us that their operation meets an acceptable level of safety".

Now it has been approved locally, Wing is looking to expand the delivery service with a launch in Helskini, Finland.

Wing said the feedback obtained during its trials had been "valuable" and it hoped to "continue the dialogue".
