Lakers owner Jeanie Buss reacts to Magic Johnson’s decision to step down

Lakers owner Jeanie Buss reacts to Magic Johnson’s decision to step down

Magic Johnson said a lot of things out on Tuesday night as he announced he was stepping down as the Los Angeles Lakers President of Basketball Operations.

His record in the position so far is 98-148 in three seasons with the Lakers.

Johnson made the announcement at an impromptu news conference at Staples Center before the team's game against the Portland Trail Blazers, noting that he had not even formally notified team president Jeanie Buss of his decision.

"I had more fun when I was able to be the big brother and the ambassador to everybody".

Clearly blindsided by Johnson's announcement, the Lakers also issued a team statement at halftime.

Johnson said he had not warned president Jeanie Buss of his decision to bring his two-year reign to an end.

"I'm a free bird and I've been handcuffed and I don't like that", the 59-year-old said during a press conference on Tuesday. "As we begin the process of moving forward, we will work in a measured and methodical fashion to make the right moves for the future of our organization".

Johnson also said that the Lakers are "headed in the right direction" and "next year we're going to be good". "I can't help young men who want me to help them", he said. We are deeply grateful to Magic for all that he has done for our franchise - as a player, an ambassador and an executive.

A report earlier on Tuesday noted that Johnson had not been in contact with embattled Lakers head coach Luke Walton recently.

Immediately after taking the job, Johnson stated his plan to land at least two free-agent superstars to return the Lakers to immediate title contention. Fitting, since nobody associated with the Lakers (except perhaps Alex Caruso) has been having much fun since the team was officially eliminated from playoff contention in late March following embarrassing losses to the Suns and Anthony Davis-less Pelicans. "See what she wants to do", the Lakers great added.

Johnson took on the position in February 2017, working alongside General Manager Rob Pelinka.

In speaking to reporters, Johnson said he was exhausted of the many things plaguing the team ranging from injuries, to internal politics to even betrayals. I think that she gave me full power to do what I wanted to do, but I think that with her and I, I want to always preserve our relationship and love her.
