France and Ireland ‘in solidarity’ over Brexit

France and Ireland ‘in solidarity’ over Brexit

European Union sources told Reuters in February that Dublin would soon have to come up with a plan to ensure the integrity of the single market or face checks on its own goods coming into the rest of the bloc, if they are also allowed to move freely to and from a country that is no longer a member.

Speaking in Paris after talks there with Mr Varadkar yesterday, French President Emmanuel Macron said: "I'm fully aware of the tremendous difficulties such a situation would bring about for Ireland".

"A long extension involving the participation of the United Kingdom in European elections and European institutions is far from evident and certainly not (to be taken) for granted".

"The European Union can not forever be hostage to the resolution of a political crisis in the United Kingdom", he said. The UK parliament has three times rejected her divorce deal with the EU.

"If the United Kingdom is not capable, nearly three years after the referendum, of coming forward with a solution that is supported by a majority, it will have effectively chosen a no-deal exit on its own", he said.

He continued: "The three times rejection of the withdrawal agreement by the House of Commons and the rejection of all alternative plans now puts us on the path of a United Kingdom exit without a deal".

Coveney said Ireland and the EU Commission were trying to work out how best to respond to a no-deal scenario to ensure the Good Friday Agreement was protected, but also that physical infrastructure on the border was avoided.

"And we certainly wouldn't want it getting through the Republic of Ireland into the European Union", he said.

"The UK is being consumed by Brexit, but Ireland and France and the European Union shouldn't be consumed by Brexit, we have a positive agenda for the EU which we want to deliver", he said.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel is due to meet Leo Varadkar in Dublin tomorrow to discuss no-deal preparations.

Varadkar stressed there was still time for the British prime minister to come to the European council before 10 April with "credible" proposals, and he said the EU should be open to such proposals.
