Tiger falls to Bjerregaard in WGC Match Play quarter-finals

Tiger falls to Bjerregaard in WGC Match Play quarter-finals

"We read it inside left, left centre, and the putt went left", he said.

"It was a fun match for us". We battled hard against each other.

"Although I was disappointed with how the match ended, I showed real patience and persistence to claw a couple holes back on the back nine, then squandered a great opportunity to get back to all square on 16".

The win was the 28th in Kuchar's Match Play career, the third most behind Tiger Woods and Ian Poulter in tournament history. "I got a free hole there", Woods said.

"It's quite simple. I screwed it up, it's as simple as that", Garcia said after his round. Teryn Schaefer presents the best social media posts from around the world of golf in "Good, Bad & Unusual" and after each day's play brings you the biggest talking points in "The Takeaway".

"I didn't think it was ever going to come true", he said. "I'm happy I advanced". McIlroy was on the verge of squaring the match on the 16th hole when he had a short iron for his second shot into the par-5 16th.

McIlroy powered a 340-yard drive down the centre of the first fairway but Woods responded by sending his shot three yards further past.

Instead, McIlroy followed a mammoth tee shot by finding a right rough slope, chipping over the green against a boundary mark, chipping again into a bunker and blasting out to two feet before surrendering the hole. McIlroy closed out Matthew Fitzpatrick 4-and-2 in his last group match on Friday shortly after Woods beat Patrick Cantlay 4-and-2.

Winless since 2016, the 39-year-old major champion from Northern Ireland has a 15-under 201 total. Woods had to win to have a chance to move on in his first Match Play since 2013.

A missed putt from four feet on the 18th hole cost Tiger Woods a place in the semi-finals of the WGC matchplay championship at Austin, Texas. The par-4 hole played only 276 yards, all over water, amid a stiff breeze.

Bjerregaard, who won his first European Tour title last fall at St. Andrews in the Dunhill Links, next faces Matt Kuchar on Sunday morning in the semifinals. Both players birdied the 12th and 13th holes, but it was a 30-foot eagle putt at the 15th for the Dane that tied the match.

Reigning Open champion Molinari, Europe's Ryder Cup hero in last year's triumph over the U.S. team in France, eliminated English 10th seed Paul Casey 5&4 and then beat United States 57th seed Kevin Na 6&5.

South Africa's Louis Oosthuizen beat Australia's seed Marc Leishman 2&1 to reach a last-eight date with Kevin Kisner of the United States.

Kuchar regained the lead with another two-putt birdie at the 16th and rolled in a birdie putt at the 17th from 12 feet to force Bjerregaard to answer - which he did from 10 feet to extend the match to 18. Then McIlroy, buoyed by the win and taking advantage of suddenly swirling winds, popping a long birdie to win another hole.
