Islamabad Says Shares 'International Outrage' Over US Decision on Golan Heights

Syria's state news agency says thousands of Syrians have gathered in the streets of different cities to protest President Donald Trump's formal recognition of Israel's sovereignty over the occupied Golan Heights.

In a statement, Saudi Arabia described the Golan Heights as "occupied Syrian Arab land in accordance with the relevant worldwide resolutions".

"Annexation of territory by force is prohibited under worldwide law", and any unilateral border changes go against "the rules-based global order and the U.N. Charter", they said.

Trump's decision is "completely null and void" for Turkey and for responsible members of the worldwide community that attach importance to the territorial integrity of Syria and of all the countries in the region, the statement went on to say.

Saudi Arabia firmly rejected the decision and affirmed its position that Golan Heights was occupied Syrian Arab land in accordance with the relevant worldwide resolutions, Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported.

The Golan Heights, a strategically important area due to its water resources among other reasons, has been mostly under Israel's control since the country seized the area during the 1967 Six-Day War.

A Foreign Ministry spokesman added: "Trump does not have the right or the legal authority to legitimize the occupation".

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had been pressing Trump for USA recognition since soon after Trump took office. "Canada's long-standing position remains unchanged", Global Affairs Canada said in a statement.

Lebanon said the move "violates all the rules of global law" and "undermines any effort to reach a just peace".

Iraq refuted the decision and stressed it broke global law and undermined United Nations resolutions.

If the Palestinians continue to reject Israeli offers for peace, "the US could yet recognize Israeli annexation of parts of Judea and Samaria, or step back from support for Palestinian statehood", said Weinberg.

However, the United Nations took the same position as Canada, with a spokesperson for secretary-general Antonio Guterres saying that UN policy on the Golan "is reflected in the relevant resolutions of the Security Council and that policy has not changed".

The French presidency did not immediately schedule the meeting and diplomats said there would be a discussion at the council about the request.

Israel then went on to annex the Golan in 1981 in a move not recognized internationally.

On Tuesday, the 57-member Organization of Islamic Cooperation condemned Trump's decision on the Golan, saying it legitimatized Israeli occupation in violation of global law.

"In short", he concluded, "Trump's move changes the deleterious dynamic long in place, in which the Palestinians could safely assume that their rejectionism of plan after peace plan only intensified the pressure for greater Israeli concessions".

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said it was impossible for Turkey to accept the USA decision on the Golan Heights.
