Qatar Airways delays Boeing MAX delivery until cause of crash known

This handout photograph released from the Twitter account of Ethiopian Airlines on March 10, 2019, shows a man inspecting what is believed to be wreckage at the crash site of an Ethiopia Airlines aircraft near Bishoftu, a town some 60 kilometres southeast of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

The Washington Post also reported that the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) received two complaints about Ethiopian's training and safety record in 2015, before the 737 MAX 8 was in use.

Ethiopian Airlines is widely seen as Africa's best-managed airline.

On the Lion Air crash, it was discovered that the system pushed the nose of the plane down a number of times before impact. And though it's still unclear how long the FAA order will last, other carriers are planning long term: Air Canada told its passengers to brace for cancellations heading into July.

He also said that more than two-thirds of its fleet is made up of planes manufactured by Boeing.

It comes after two brand-new 737 MAX jets crashed in short succession, killing a total of 346 people, in apparently similar circumstances.

Boeing vice president of communications Gordon Johndroe said in a statement that Max owners must "place a free of charge order through our standard orders system".

Holiday giant TUI has said it will travel to the U.S. to meet Boeing executives as the plane-maker seeks to return its stricken 737 MAX jet to service after two fatal crashes.

The 737 MAX is Boeing's best-selling plane, with orders worth more than $500 billion at list prices. The airline had been flying 24 of the Boeing planes, and said it is canceling the flights in an effort to provide more certainty, and avoid last-minute scheduling changes. American, which has 24 MAX aircraft in its fleet, and Southwest, which has 34, agree with union statements that their pilots are trained well enough to deal with the incidents that the Lion Air pilots encountered. The company is swapping other types of planes for canceled MAX flights. After the update, the system will rely on data from more than one sensor before it automatically pushes the plane's nose lower. However, he added that "Boeing has kept the FAA in the loop throughout the process and we expect to receive the software from Boeing early this week". The problems revealed a lack of pilot training around the flight control system.

The training and software fixes are part of a full-court press by Boeing to restore confidence in its 737 MAX 8 jets.

To return to business as usual, Boeing will have to satisfy not only the FAA but also global regulators, skeptical airlines in the US and elsewhere, and the flying public.

"Given the magnitude of our 737 MAX operations which on average carry nine to twelve thousand customers per day, customers can expect delays in rebooking", the airline said.
