Canadians aboard troubled cruise ship; 1 injured: Global Affairs Canada

About 1,300 passengers and crew were rescued from a luxury cruise ship off the west coast of Norway on Saturday after it suffered engine failure in stormy weather.

The ship's 1,300 passengers and crew are being evacuated via several helicopters and ships.

This photo provided by Michal Stewart shows passengers on board the Viking Sky, waiting to be evacuated, off the coast of Norway on Saturday, March 23, 2019.

The cruise ship was travelling from Tromso to Stavanger when it hit trouble in a stretch of waters that are notoriously unsafe.

According to Police, the Viking Sky was in distress due to engine problems.

He could not immediately say how long the ship would remain in Molde.

Latest report has indicated that the ship has restarted and is now moving at a slow pace.

Comprising mostly of both British and American Tourists, passengers have taken to social media to post the event as they wait for rescue.

The tugboats, one in front of the ship and the other behind it, were towing at a speed of 7 knots (13 kilometres per hour). The ship departed from Bergen, Norway on March 14 and was expected to dock at a London port on March 26.

Authorities initially sent five helicopters and a number of vessels to evacuate those on board.

Waves up to eight metres high were striking the ship, making rescue efforts by boat essentially impossible.

The Viking Sky lost engine power and became crippled in rough waters Saturday, forcing it to weigh anchor just 300 feet from jagged rocks to conduct airlift rescue operations in the Norwegian Sea, according to the Associated Press.

The ship, built in 2017, belongs to Viking Ocean Cruises, part of the Viking Cruises group founded by Norwegian billionaire Torstein Hagen.

Viking Cruises said it will continue to follow up with them to ensure their needs are covered.

"All passengers and crew are safe, and passengers will be flying home starting tonight", the update from Viking Ocean Cruises said. "Therefore we would prefer to have the passengers on land rather than on board the ship". The vessel is about 80km from Molde, Norway's maritime rescue service said.
