Ichiro To Retire After Thursdays Game In Tokyo

Ichiro Suzuki spent his final two games donning a Seattle Mariners jersey, playing in right field in front of a frenzied crowd in his home country of Japan. In his last at-bat, he came up with two outs, a runner on second and a tie score in the eighth.

Ichiro came out to his spot in right field in the bottom half of the inning, but was pulled from the game.

A packed crowd of 45,787 was buzzing for its favorite star, sending cheers, chants and camera flashes for Ichiro bounding all around the park.

Ichiro has 4,367 hits over his career in Nippon Professional Baseball and the MLB. Ichiro is in the starting lineup for the Mariners in what might be his last game in the majors.

There's nothing like baseball. He also won three Silver Slugger Awards and 10-straight Gold Glove Awards. Led by Commissioner Robert D. Manfred, Jr., MLB now features record levels of labor peace, competitive balance and industry revenues, as well as the most comprehensive drug-testing program in American professional sports. Each teammate greeted him individually and Hall of Famer Ken Griffey Jr. awaited for an embrace as Ichiro entered the dugout.

A few days before Kikuchi's first Major League Baseball start, Ichiro said he felt the left-hander had what it takes to become an ace one day. Kikuchi, who worked into the fifth inning, bowed to Ichiro - the 27-year-old lefty was tearing up as he buried his head into Ichiro's shoulder.

Domingo Santana, who hit a grand slam in Seattle's 9-7 win in the opener Wednesday, beat out a double-play relay with the bases loaded to drive in the go-ahead run in the 12th. He had 1,278 career hits in Japanese baseball and 3,089 in the major leagues.

Yet when Mariners teammate Dee Gordon bowed, Ichiro broke into a laugh - like, "not necessary, bro". He was a phenom from the moment he arrived in the United States from Japan. Ramirez went on to hit 39 more home runs, so Ichiro's robbery merely prevented him from becoming the first Indians hitter since Travis Hafner in 2006 with at least 40 dingers in a season.

Suzuki, who was set to hold a post-game press conference, went 0-for-4, with the applause growing in intensity each time up.

Beckham got three hits and scored three times. Several of the players in this game weren't born when Suzuki began his pro career. They'll switch back into spring training mode before the Major League Baseball campaign resumes with all 30 clubs on March 28. But it seems likely he will not be on the Mariners' 25-man roster when the regular season resumes with a four-game series in Seattle against the Boston Red Sox.
