Tulsi Gabbard Slams Trump’s Endorsement Of Israeli Sovereignty Over Golan Heights

USA top diplomat Mike Pompeo planned to visit Jerusalem's Western Wall alongside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Thursday in what would be a break with longstanding diplomatic practice.

The territory was captured by Israel from Syria during the Six Day War in 1967 and officially annexed by Israel in 1981.

"We are very grateful to the President for having the courage to express that position and look forward to the U.S. formally recognizing Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights", Hagee said in a statement.

Netanyahu is scheduled to meet with Trump at the White House twice next week. Netanyahu is to be in Washington for two days next week - two weeks before Israel's April 9 ballot.

In 2017, Trump controversially recognised Jerusalem as Israel's capital and announced the move of the U.S. embassy there, breaking with decades of worldwide consensus.

Israel has sought worldwide recognition of its sovereignty in the disputed Golan Heights for decades, but in the last three months has recruited powerful allies in a renewed campaign to influence Trump, including Sens.

"President Trump's decision to recognise the Golan as part of Israel is strategically wise and overall awesome".

"Lebanon faces a choice: bravely move forward as an independent and proud nation, or allow the dark ambitions of Iran and Hezbollah to dictate your future", he said.

"Now we need Congress to codify this policy", Neil Strauss, the digital director for the Republican Jewish Coalition, told Al-Monitor.

President Trump made the announcement via tweet Thursday.

Following the establishment of a ceasefire in 1967, Israel began the construction of settlements in the Heights and moved settlers there, in contravention of worldwide law.

No unilateral "declarations"-whether about Jerusalem, the Golan Heights, or Palestinian refugees-can erase the Palestinian and Syrian identities of those places or the ongoing resistance of the Palestinian and Syrian peoples against oppression".

Ted Cruz, R-Texas, Tom Cotton, R-Ark., and Rep. Mike Gallagher, R-Wis., said in a statement. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is now in the midst of his most hard reelection thus far and has long called for USA recognition of the Golan, took to Twitter to celebrate the news.

The news comes following Trump's tweet that the USA could recognise the contested Golan Heights region as a part of Israel. Pompeo, a devout Christian, also stopped at the church.

In 2017, Trump went against decades of practice by recognizing the disputed city of Jerusalem as Israel's capital, rather than the previously accepted Tel Aviv.

The Old City is home to Jerusalem's most sensitive holy sites, including the Western Wall and the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, where tradition says Jesus was entombed and resurrected.

"More work remains to be done to align American policy with today's recognition", Cotton said. If the president's post is a genuine declaration of US policy (far from a given), then it represents a major diplomatic victory for Netanyahu.

"If Democrats are committed to bipartisan support for Israel, as they claim, they will get behind this effort", he said.
