Facebook's massive outage was the result of a server configuration change

Facebook's massive outage was the result of a server configuration change

In addition to Facebook, irate users noted that the outage likewise affected Instagram and WhatsApp. Some people weren't able to reach Facebook's website and apps, including Facebook, Messenger, Instagram and WhatsApp.

Police in Bothell, Washington had to make a similar plea on their Twitter account.

Facebook and Instagram has been coming back online for most users on March 14, but it appears it's not completely out of the woods yet.

Facebook blamed a "server configuration change" Thursday for a massive outage affecting its applications around the world and brought fresh attention to the embattled social networking leader. Facebook said the issue had been resolved and that it's systems were recovering. Today, Facebook boasts 2.3 billion monthly users, The Verge reports, making the recent outage the worst yet for the company.

The company also quickly dismissed concerns that the outage was the result of a distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack. Facebook product director Rob Leathern said on Twitter that people were also unable to access the social network's ad interfaces, which may exacerbate any lost revenue from the outage. The outage prompted exasperation from business owners and individuals who rely on Facebook's platforms to communicate, and inspired a flood of derision on Twitter, where some users migrated to stay connected.

Separately, the New York Times reported on Wednesday that US federal prosecutors were conducting a criminal investigation into data deals Facebook struck with more than 150 technology companies such as Amazon.com Inc and Apple Inc. Users in Asia were having problems on Thursday morning. Amazon was reportedly allowed to see user contact information.

While Facebook said it has "resolved its issues", the update was sparse on details.
