U.S. actress Lori Loughlin arrested in college bribery scandal

U.S. actress Lori Loughlin arrested in college bribery scandal

Actresses Felicity Huffman and Lori Loughlin were among 50 people charged in what prosecutors called the "largest college admissions scam" ever uncovered by the Department of Justice. However, until her preliminary hearing, which is scheduled for March 29 in Boston, Huffman is ordered to hand over her passport.

Loughlin and her husband Mossimo Giannulli allegedly worked with Singer to pay USC $500,000 to recruit her daughters to the university's crew team, despite neither of them being rowers.

William "Rick" Singer, 58, pleaded guilty on Tuesday to charges related to running the scheme through his Edge College & Career Network, which charged between $100,000 and $2.5 million per child for the services and masked as contributions to a scam charity Singer runs, according to Reuters.

In addition to Loughlin, the group included "Desperate Housewives" actress Felicity Huffman. Former Pimco Chief Executive Douglas Hodge is due to be arraigned in federal court in Boston, officials said.

Authorities say the coaches accepted bribes in exchange for admitting students as athletes, regardless of their ability.

The sums that authorities say the accused parents paid in bribes would, for many, finance a college education many times over.

Court documents said Huffman paid $15,000 that she disguised as a charitable donation so that her daughter could take part in the college entrance cheating scam.

According to prosecutors, the accused parents paid a firm run by Singer as much as US$6 million to cheat on college entrance exams for their children or to bribe coaches to help non-athletic students get scholarships. Stanford fired the sailing coach, and USC dropped its water polo coach and an athletic administrator.

According to CNN, Macy is not charged or named in court documents.

The co-operator told investigators that Huffman and her spouse "agreed to the plan".

"The prime movers of this fraud" were the parents and other defendants, Lelling said, though he noted some students may face charges down the road. A representative from the Federal Bureau of Investigation told the Times that they did not use a tactical team for her arrest, but noted that "all Federal Bureau of Investigation agents are armed and may draw their weapons as a precautionary measured based on the circumstances during the execution of any warrant".

She tells him, "I know you want what's best for them, but you know what?"

On Wednesday, the judge specified that the actress will be allowed to speak to her two daughters and husband about the charges, but to no one else connected with the case, reports Variety.

The parents were then advised to choose one of two test centres that Mr Singer's company said it had control over: one in Houston, Texas, and the other in West Hollywood, California.
