Turkey pushes back after U.S. warning over missile defense purchase

Recently, US State Department spokesperson warned that Turkey may be slapped with secondary sanctions and lose access to the F-35 fighter plane if it went ahead with its plans to purchase the S-400.

Ankara's push to buy the systems from Moscow has caused tensions with its North Atlantic Treaty Organisation ally, as Washington has raised questions over the equipment's compatibility with the alliance's established weapon systems. The National Defence Authorisation Act (NDAA), it considered the S-400 deal a threat to the security of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation alliance, and enforced a freeze on F-35 deliveries until the State Department submits a report to Congress detailing a "description of plans for the imposition of sanctions, if appropriate" for the S-400 purchase.

The European Central Bank's revision of growth and inflation forecasts on Thursday and weak trade data from China on Friday also put pressure on the lira, Ziraat Investment said in a note.

The US government has repeatedly urged Turkey to scrap the plan, but Turkey has yet to agree.

Summers said the United States may also block Ankara from purchasing Patriot missile systems.

"My best military advice would be that we don't then follow through with the F-35, flying it or working with an ally that's working with Russian systems", Scaparrotti told the Senate Armed Services Committee in testimony on Tuesday.

"It's done. There can never be a turning back", Erdogan responded this week when asked about the S-400 contract. We will start joint production.

Turkey would withhold F-35 fighter jets or US Patriot missiles approved for sale to Ankara in December for $3.5 billion, he warned.

This week, despite the Central Bank maintaining interest rates well above inflation, Turkey's currency has fallen 1.5 percent - largely due to renewed concerns over relations with Washington, traders say. Of that contentious debate, for which the United States has held up delivery of F-35 stealth jets purchased previously by Turkey, Erdogan said emphatically, "this is over".

In June 2018 a military-diplomatic source told TASS that Russia's defense companies are working to complete S-400 deliveries to Turkey in May 2019.

"We've long made it clear, we would like to work collaboratively on air and missile defense with Turkey, and we have offered opportunities for Turkey to consider Patriot among other systems over the years", stated deputy spokesman Robert Palladino.
