What is the disturbing 'Momo Challenge' - and why is it resurfacing?

The orders become increasingly violent and unsafe, including instructions to threaten others and self-harm.

The acts include asking children to harm themselves and photograph it to continue playing the game and avoid being cursed, Newsweek reported.

In a Facebook posting Saturday titled "Suicide game targeting our kids", the Police Service of Northern Ireland cautioned parents that the game can hide "itself within other harmless looking games played by our kids!"

She added: "YouTube - please help!"

She said: 'He showed me an image of the face on my phone and said that she had told him to go into the kitchen drawer and take out a knife and put it into his neck.

It reportedly also tells those it is communicating with that bad things will happen if they report their involvement to adults.

"It doesn't come on instantly so it's nearly as if it waits for you to leave the room then comes on in mid-show".

Detective Sergeant Elaine McCormill from the PSNI's Public Protection Branch said that while police have received no official reports reloading to the challenge, they were working with other UK Police Services to identify the extent of the problem.

After the first case of the "Momo challenge" was discovered in the United Kingdom, the boy's parent, who wished to remain anonymous, said she was "deeply alarmed" when her seven-year-old son's teacher told her he'd made threats to other children in school.

It is believed that some videos on YouTube are suddenly interrupted halfway through by the character popping up.

It adds that "as a parent, it's hard to spot these videos as the harmful content doesn't appear until partway through the video".

Parent Gemma Leanne Walker, 26, of St Mary's Bay who has a nine-year-old daughter, Ella, at Dymchurch Primary, said: "I usually think things like this that circulate are nothing but with this one my daughter came to me to ask me to google it".

"Another video clip is going by the name of "MoMo" which shows a warped white mask which is promoting children to do unsafe tasks without telling their parents".

Trends and viral challenges can be tempting for children to take part in; no matter how unsafe or scary they seem. Like with anything to do with keeping children safe and making them aware of exploitation in all forms, the messages have to be quite factual, which is why we have included online guidance.

This will give you a greater understanding of what they are doing on their devices, as well as providing you with the opportunity to discuss, support and stop certain activities that your child may be involved in.

It is important to reassure your child that Momo is not a real person and can not harm them.

"Make sure you talk to your child about how they shouldn't succumb to peer pressure, and do anything they are not comfortable with, online or offline". "We encourage you to be vigilant when your child is using any device or watching any clips".

The sixth point directs parents to work out the source of what the children are watching and to be "mindful of what you share as it may only cause more worry".
