Iran's Rouhani rejects Foreign Minister Zarif's resignation

Iran's Rouhani rejects Foreign Minister Zarif's resignation

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif signed two agreements with Armenia in Tehran, television footage showed, continuing his duties as Iran's top diplomat after President Hassan Rouhani rejected his resignation.

Assad was warmly received by Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei as well as Gen. Qassem Soleimani, the commander of an elite unit of the Revolutionary Guard.

The US-educated veteran diplomat helped craft the pact that curbed Iran's nuclear program in return for sanctions relief.

"Since you are "honest, brave, courageous and pious",..."

Since the United States walked out of the nuclear deal and reimposed sanctions previous year, Rouhani has had to explain why Iran has continued to abide by its restrictions while reaping virtually none of the foreseen economic benefits.

Rouhani and Zarif, who are considered relative moderates, have been facing pressure from Iranian hardliners as the deal they championed has unraveled.

In his Instagram post, Zarif offered a vague "apology" for his "inability to continue" his service.

He expressed hope that the ministry "can carry out all its responsibilities within the framework of the constitution (and) the country's laws" with the "cooperation of. and supervision by the supreme leader and the president".

"As a modest servant, I have never had any concern but elevating the foreign policy and the status of the foreign ministry", he said in the post.

Soulemani, who oversees Iran's military involvement in Syria, commented on Zarif's absence from the Monday meeting saying "Some inconsistencies in the presidential office that have been raised have led to the absence of our country's foreign minister at this meeting".

Just two days after announcing his resignation on Instagram, Iran's Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif has returned to work, according to the country's state news agency Press TV.

The Iranian president's chief of staff, Mahmoud Vaezi, on Tuesday rejected media reports that the president has accepted Zarif's resignation.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo had tweeted that it made no difference to Washington, whether Zarif stays or goes.

Soleimani blasted the "enemies' glee" and said it would have no effect on Iran's determination to "safeguard its national interests and the glorious victory of the Islamic resistance front".
