West MI mother warns of ‘Momo Challenge,’ unsafe viral game

West MI mother warns of ‘Momo Challenge,’ unsafe viral game

A mother found YouTube videos that she claims offers instructions to children on how to kill themselves.

She campaigned to have the clip removed but found this month that it had resurfaced on the site, apparently hidden in the middle of a cartoon.

A fellow mother, a physician, had initially alerted her to the clip on YouTube Kids, saying it had been "intentionally planted on YouTube Kids to harm our children".

The man featured is YouTuber Filthy Frank, who has over 6.2 million subscribers and calls himself "the embodiment of everything a person should not be", although there is no evidence that Frank, whose real name is George Miller, was involved in creating the doctored video.

A mother's disturbing discovery on YouTube Kids has her issuing a warning to parents.

"We appreciate people drawing problematic content to our attention, and make it possible for anyone to flag a video", the statement said.

The original video has since been removed from YouTube and YouTube Kids, but there's nothing stopping someone from posting another like it. "But one of the top videos claimed to show a UFO shooting at a chemtrail, and we found several videos by prominent conspiracy theorist David Icke in the suggested videos", Business Insider reported.

On her blog, Hess says "self-harm and suicidal-promoting content" is a big problem.

Hess found other videos on YouTube Kids that make light of and glorify suicide, sexual abuse, human trafficking, domestic violence, and shootings.

I don't doubt that social media and things such as this are contributing, "she later told CNN".

Another mum, who did not wish to be named, said: "I've put a complete ban on YouTube".

"I don't think you can just take them down", she said about the videos.

We work to make the videos in YouTube Kids family-friendly and take feedback very seriously. "We are always working to improve our systems and to remove violative content more quickly, which is why we report our progress in a quarterly report (transparencyreport.google.com) and give users a dashboard showing the status of videos they've flagged to us".

Simulating the use of a knife or razor blade on his arm, he said, "Kids, remember, cut this way for attention, and this way for results", before walking out off screen.

Hess also wants parents to be more aware of what their children are watching on YouTube and YouTube Kids, and for parents to do a better job in general of keeping up with technology.

A spokesperson told Mirror Online: "Children can find it hard to stand up to peer pressure but they must know it's perfectly okay to refuse to take part in crazes that make them feel unsafe or scared".

Those who need help, including children, can call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK.
