Trump's loyalty obsession could lead to obstruction case

Trump's loyalty obsession could lead to obstruction case

The conservative attorney, who is married to top White House aide Kellyanne Conway (herself a former pollster), on Wednesday asked his 344,000 Twitter followers to vote for who they believed had more credibility: the president or the New York Times.

The crisis began just 25 days into Mr Trump's tenure and centres on whether his 2016 election campaign colluded with Russian Federation in meddling in the democratic process.

Trump's missive was likely referring to a Tuesday report by The Times citing several unidentified US "officials" as saying that the president asked his handpicked acting attorney general, Matthew Whitaker, to put a political ally in charge of the criminal investigation into Michael Cohen. But nine days later, Trump broke the agreement to keep the meeting private when he tweeted about the conversation and said the two men discussed "the vast amounts of Fake News being put out by the media & how that Fake News has morphed into phrase, 'Enemy of the People.' Sad!"

"There's just abundant evidence that Donald Trump has committed crimes in office", Johnston said during a guest appearance on Dean Obeidallah's radio show on Sirius XM.

The Times responded to Trump's tweet early Wednesday afternoon with a tweet defending its reporting. Cohen's lawyer said he was undergoing intensive post-surgery physical therapy and spending substantial time getting ready to testify. Mr Trump's son-in-law and adviser Jared Kushner reportedly agreed.

The piece touches on everything from the firing of James Comey to pressuring former White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer to lie about Trump asking for Michael Flynn's resignation. "Why would any American president try to stop the FBI from investigating what the Russians might have done to our election?"

The allegation appeared Tuesday in a New York Times article that said Trump called Matthew Whitaker to see if he would put the probe in the hands of Geoffrey Berman, U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York.

McCabe said Thursday that Republicans on Capitol Hill were engaged in a "consistent and obvious attempt" to protect the president by undermining law enforcement. The former Federal Bureau of Investigation official also has stated "it's possible" that Trump could be a Russian asset.

In August, Cohen admitted he made illegal campaign contributions at the behest of Trump and pleaded guilty to campaign finance violations in connection with the hush-money payments.

His testimony to the House Oversight Committee was delayed when Cohen alleged Mr Trump and Mr Giuliani were making public threats against him and his family.
