Measles Outbreak Has Cost Washington More Than $1 Million

Measles Outbreak Has Cost Washington More Than $1 Million

Before the outbreak, Calueng said the DoH was already tasked to conduct massive vaccinations throughout the region in collaboration with the different barangay (villages) health workers, the municipal and provincial health offices and other health volunteers.

Measles is very infectious and the illness can have serious complications, especially for infants under 12 months and those with weakened immune systems.

A petition calling for mandatory measles vaccinations for children attending public school in B.C. had nearly 35,000 signatures on Wednesday evening.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, from January 1 to the present, a total of 127 individual cases of measles have been confirmed across 10 states.

The health department continues to urge Filipinos to get vaccinated in their barangays and raise awareness on the benefits of vaccination for their health.

Infection with the virus begins with a high fever, cough, runny nose and red eyes, followed by a blotchy rash that spreads from the face and neck to the rest of the body.

The measles virus is highly contagious, typically spread by airborne means. He told CBC News that his son, who he chose not to have vaccinated, contracted measles during a holiday to Vietnam earlier in the year, before bringing it back to Canada. In 2017, there were 110,000 measles deaths, mostly among children younger than age 5, the World Health Organization says.

Kellner says it's time to find a way to compel people to get past vaccine hesitancy and help them understand it is safe and will protect their health and others.

According to Dr. Alan Melnick, director of public health for Clark County, Wash., an unvaccinated person can be in the room two hours after someone with measles has left, and still contract the disease. These symptoms develop between 7 to 21 days after a person is exposed. From measles, this includes brain damage and death. People who came in contact with the infected individuals are being monitored.

"Before this outbreak started, we had documentation for only about 70 per cent of students having immunity", said Hayden, adding that the rise in immunity is not just due to new vaccinations but also the result of those who have now reported their vaccination records, when their immunization status was previously undeclared.

The head of the US Food and Drug Administration says that if states don't require more schoolchildren to get vaccinated, the federal government might have to step in.

Recent measles outbreaks in states such as Washington, New York, and New Jersey have cast a spotlight on a group of Americans who receive exemptions from immunizing their children on the grounds that the vaccines violate their religious freedoms.
