Jussie Smollett suspended from Empire after arrest

The hit Fox drama Empire will cut Jussie Smollett's character from the final two episodes of its fifth season to "avoid further disruption on set," according to a new statement from the show's producers. While these allegations are very disturbing, we are placing our trust in the legal system as the process plays out.

Smollett, who plays a gay character on the hit Fox television show "Empire", said he was attacked January 29 as he was walking home from a downtown Subway sandwich shop.

Following a police investigation, the USA star was charged with disorderly conduct for filing a false police report after he turned himself in and was arrested. He is no longer in police custody and must return to court on March 14.

Smollett claimed that he was attacked by two Trump supporters earlier this month who tied a noose around his neck, poured bleach on him and yelled racial and homophobic epithets towards him.

If he's found guilty of the charges against him, Smollett could face a maximum of three years in prison.

According to TMZ, Smollett's return to the set was emotional as he apologized to his "Empire" co-stars and maintained his innocence. The latter resembled the red hats that say "Make America Great Again", which are worn by Trump and supporters of the president.

In a press conference, Chicago police superintendent Eddie Johnson revealed that they believed Smollett had orchestrated the attack because he was "dissatisfied with his salary" and wanted to "promote his career". And they're also said to be "worried" about how Smollett's alleged actions may impact Empire.

The studio's statement followed reports that Smollett's role was being slashed amid the police investigation.

Detective Commander Edward Wodnicki said at a news conference Thursday that after questioning the brothers for almost two days last week, they were released and investigators no longer viewed them as suspects.

The statement came after Chicago police Supt.

Referring to a published account of the attack, President Donald Trump told reporters at the White House that "it doesn't get worse, as far as I'm concerned".

Lawyers for Empire star Jussie Smollett blasted what they called an "organized law enforcement spectacle" on Thursday after the actor was arrested, charged with felony disorderly conduct for allegedly lying to police and later freed after posting a $100,000 bond. "There are still some questions that we have, some answers that have to be given", she said. "20th Century Fox Television executive VP of corporate communications and publicity, Chris Alexander, confirmed that Smollett was on set filming on Thursday".
