No. 1 Duke, Zion figuring out what's next after knee injury

No. 1 Duke, Zion figuring out what's next after knee injury

"We are obviously concerned and want to wish Zion a speedy recovery", Nike said in a statement.

The injury also set off a fresh round of debate about whether Williamson - the possible No. 1 overall pick in the National Basketball Association draft, should he leave Duke after his freshman season - would be wise to end his college season in an attempt to avoid an injury that could jeopardize his pro career. But the sportswear giant says it's an "isolated occurrence".

Nike's basketball sneaker sales fell past year as consumers move away from performance sneakers to more casual and comfortable shoes.

Williamson left 36 seconds into Duke's game against North Carolina after blowing out the side of his right shoe and suffering what Krzyzewski called a "mild knee sprain" after the Blue Devils' 88-72 loss Wednesday. As he planted his, Williamson's left foot went completely through his Nike shoe.

Despite the early decline on Thursday, however, the value of Nike's stock has increased by 27 percent over the last 12 months.

One of best college basketball players in the country suffered a knee injury during perhaps the highest-profile game of the season Wednesday night when his foot burst through the sole of his shoe.

Williamson's injury unfolded in an unusual manner. For comparison, the University of Kentucky, another top basketball school, extended its Nike deal a few years ago for eight years and $30.6 million.

That led to a sprained knee for the player, who didn't return to the game, which Duke eventually lost.

But then there's the young man who was wearing those shoes - Zion Williamson.

So it's not that Barrett is being ignored or overlooked, but it's more about how dominant Williamson's presence is across the entirety of college basketball.

To be fair, Williamson didn't have to play for Duke.

Williamson reacts after falling as his shoe breaks. Tickets for the game were reselling for more than $3,000 - Super Bowl prices. Former President Barack Obama had a meme-able moment in reacting to it, and it appeared that the whole thing was just that, a amusing moment of a large man's shoe breaking. It is widely available, retailing for $110, and now on sale on Nike's website for $92.97.

Mediaite reached out to Puma for comment on why they the posted and deleted the tweet shortly after posting it, but did not receive a response. Of course Zion is a freshman, but he plays so far above his first year that he's nearly like a veteran.
