ISIS teen 'shocked' after United Kingdom revokes her citizenship

ISIS teen 'shocked' after United Kingdom revokes her citizenship

The British Home Office informed Begum's family in a letter on Tuesday that her citizenship was being revoked. "I feel like it's a bit unjust on me and my son". It's a bit upsetting and frustrating.

"I heard that other people are being sent back to Britain, so I don't know why my case is any different to other people, or is it just because I was on the news four years ago?" she said.

Begum was one of a group of schoolgirls who left London to join the terror group.

He added that, if approached, the ministry would need to try to verify Begum's Bangladeshi heritage to assess any possible eligibility for citizenship.

Begum Wednesday Yago Riedijk, a convicted terrorist from the Netherlands, three weeks after she fled to Syria. "Everyone else in that refugee camp is also effectively stateless".

"Maybe I can ask for citizenship in Holland", Begum added.

"If you were sitting in a refugee camp of Syria, regardless of whatever passport you hold, you are effectively stateless, and you're not getting any protection", said Brad Blitz, a professor at Middlesex University London who works on migration, statelessness and citizenship.

However the Bangladesh foreign ministry said in a statement that Begum is not a Bangladeshi citizen, nor has she ever visited the country. In other words, the government can argue that the person it is trying to strip of citizenship is going to get citizenship elsewhere - giving the government grounds to revoke the person's existing legal status.

But the BBC reported she might have automatic right to Bangladeshi citizenship until she is 21, through a parent.

"But when someone turns their back on (our) fundamental values and supports terror they don't have an automatic right to return to the United Kingdom", he said.

However, Bangladesh's state minister of foreign affairs, Sharial Alam, said Begum was not a Bangladeshi citizen and did not have dual citizenship.

Does Shamima Begum have dual nationality?

Javid's decision was roundly criticised by Muslim groups who said it put millions of British citizens who are dual nationals or eligible for citizenship in another country at risk of having their citizenship revoked.

Mr Javid said on Wednesday that worldwide law meant Britain could only do this if it did not leave the person stateless, if they were dual nationals or "in some limited circumstances they have the right to citizenship elsewhere".

"Children should not suffer so if a parent does lose their British citizenship it does not affect the rights of their child", Mr Javid said.

Lord Carlile, a former reviewer of terrorism legislation, said: 'The test will be of reasonableness and proportionality so she would have to establish that the Home Secretary acted in an entirely disproportionate way in removing her nationality'.

One of the artist's previous cards has a picture of paedophile Jimmy Savile, captioned: "Thanks for never letting Jim fix it for me". I never made propaganda. "Even though these girls were talking to ISIS being encouraged to go out to (Syria), the police still didn't tell the family what was happening", he said.

Her family's lawyer, Tasnime Akunjee, said he was "considering all legal avenues to challenge" Britain's decision.
