Vladimir Putin warns Russian Federation will target U.S. with missiles in retaliatory move

Vladimir Putin warns Russian Federation will target U.S. with missiles in retaliatory move

During the speech, Putin referenced how the Trump administration had recently withdrawn from a treaty established during the Cold War, while giving a stern warning that it would aim their own missiles at the USA if Washington deployed new intermediate-range missiles in Europe.

Competing interests between Russia and the United States were not a legitimate reason to rehash old historical conflicts thrusting the world into crisis, Russian President Vladimir Putin has said.

Mr Putin also told the Federal Assembly work on the advanced Tsirkon hypersonic missile capable of developing a speed of up to Mach 9 is proceeding successfully and will be completed on time.

The intermediate-range weapons were seen as particularly destabilizing as they take shorter time to reach their targets compared to the intercontinental ballistic missiles.

Treaty has become outdated but the United States has used far-fetched accusations against Russia to withdraw from it, Russian President Vladimir Putin said in his annual Address to both houses of the national parliament on Wednesday.

He said 16 more warships of this class will enter service with the Russian Navy by 2027.

The United States has dismissed comments by Russian President Vladimir Putin that Moscow would match any USA move to deploy new nuclear missiles closer to Russia as propaganda created to divert attention from alleged Russian violations of an arms control treaty.

Putin insisted Russian Federation will not be the first to deploy ground-launched ballistic missiles in Europe but will retaliate if America does so. That would leave practically no time for decision-makers, raising the likelihood of a global nuclear conflict over a false launch warning. He said it will not only target the host countries but field new weapons that will target USA decision-making centers.

Putin was rather more vague about when these super-weapons would be ready for deployment.

"The United States has gone to tremendous lengths to preserve the INF Treaty, engaging with Russian officials more than 30 times in almost six years to discuss Russia's violation, including at the highest levels of government", he added.

He added that the missile is created to equip existing surface ships and submarines.

Putin added that the military will deploy more Kinzhal airborne hypersonic missiles, which entered service a year ago.

"This is a very serious threat to us".

Political analyst Aleksey Mukhin predicts Putin's speech this year will focus primarily on "internal politics and the economy", which has suffered since it was hit with Western sanctions in 2014 over Moscow's role in the Ukraine conflict.

The menacing talk about new weapons and the tough warnings aimed at the US followed a speech that mostly focused on domestic issues.

"I don't think this signals some change in policy, it's just a recognition that there's nothing that can be done" to improve relations, said Andrei Kortunov, head of the Russian International Affairs Council, a Moscow-based research group.
