Huawei security concerns could be managed, says GCHQ

Huawei security concerns could be managed, says GCHQ

The office of British Prime Minister Theresa May said the government is still reviewing its policies on the safety of 5G networks, and that "no decisions have been taken".

The UK will not need to ban Huawei's 5G kit, despite rumors that the company's hardware could pose a national security risk, reports have claimed.

Growing U.S. pressure on allies to shun Huawei Technologies Ltd., China's first global tech brand, increasingly threatens its access to global markets for next-generation telecoms technology. The United States has said their equipment could be used to spy on Americans.

A report by the Financial Times cites "two people familiar with the conclusion" of analysis into the perceived threat of Huawei.

What are the security concerns over Huawei? Huawei has always denied it is in collusion with its government.

Earlier this month, the chief of Britain's foreign intelligence service said Britain should avoid relying on a monopoly provider of equipment in new 5G mobile networks, but that there were no easy answers to concerns about using Huawei.

The company faces outright bans from being involved in the rollout of 5G networks in Australia, New Zealand and the U.S., with Canada and the United Kingdom still undecided on their approach.

China's government has accused Washington of trying to block its industrial development after Vice President Mike Pence said Chinese tech giant Huawei and other telecom equipment suppliers are a security threat. Huawei did get another round of bad publicity in December 2018, when the company CFO Meng Wanzhou was arrested in Vancouver on suspicion of bank fraud.

Huawei did not respond to requests for comment. It will be up to the country's government to decide whether to take the NCSC's advice on board.

Hannigan argued that British security officials had never found evidence of Huawei involvement in Chinese state-sponsored cyberespionage, and that political fashion or trade wars should not eclipse rational assessment of risk. We have set out the improvements we expect the company to make.
