Senate Dems on Green New Deal debate: 'Bring

According to a GOP strategist that spoke with Axios, Republicans will emphasize the Green New Deal among "middle, lower classes and poverty stricken areas of America", broad constituencies crucial to either party's 2020 hopes.

In July of 2017, Republicans brought forward a single-payer health care amendment for a vote, which failed 0-57, all Democrats voting against it. Minority Leader Chuck Schumer slammed the maneuver as "pure cynicism, pure politics" at the time. "Now that is what the American people hate about Congress - the pointless partisan games".

As it turns out, Democrats aren't too eager to vote on it. Sen. Still, Schumer, joined by colleagues on the Senate floor, said: "Bring it on".

"It may be that this becomes a consensus position in the Democratic caucus, I'm just not sure everybody's there yet", Murphy said of the climate change legislation.

Earlier this week, McConnell said that the Senate will vote on the Green New Deal - endorsed by almost all top 2020 Democratic presidential candidates - in an effort to force Democrats to officially go on the record for the radical proposal.

"I've noted with great interest the Green New Deal", McConnell told reporters at the Capitol Tuesday afternoon.

Unable to get an answer from the panel on whether the Green New Deal would require the government to set up a "vacation commissar", Cheney asked who among them supports Ocasio-Cortez's proposal. It recently came under scrutiny after revelations that a related FAQ document included passages promising a job to "all people of the United States" - including those "unwilling to work" - and suggesting air travel could be made obsolete.

"Here's [McConnell] saying, you guys say we've got 12 years, we better get a vote on this".

During the government shutdown last month, McConnell blocked an attempt by Senate Democrats to force a vote on a House-passed spending bill to reopen the government that lacked Trump's backing.

A number of 2020 Democratic presidential candidates are co-sponsors of the bill including senators Kamala Harris, Elizabeth Warren, Cory Booker, Amy Klobuchar, and Kirsten Gillibrand.

President Donald Trump took aim at the resolution at a rally in El Paso, Texas, on Monday, decrying it as "socialism" and painting elements of the proposal as pie-in-the-sky dreaming.

Ocasio-Cortez issued her own rebuke hours later.

Sen. Ed Markey, D-Mass, a co-sponsor of the plan, also decried McConnell's move. We can't let Republicans sabotage it.

Sen. Brian Schatz (D-Hawaii) criticized Republicans on Tuesday for pledging to hold what is essentially a show vote on the Green New Deal, given that they have not advanced any serious efforts to address climate change. Politico says McConnell's campaign team has begun compiling opposition research on McGrath, and Republicans involved in a pro-McConnell super PAC are meeting this week to begin plotting strategy for a possible campaign against her.
